Sony To Reveal 500GB PS3?

With new hardware reveals a possibility for Sony at E3 and new PS3 models having already been through FCC certification, what do you get when you add the two together?  If you are an “industry source” talking to CVG it adds up to a new PS3 in a Move bundle.

The new PS3s are said to feature a choice of 250GB or 500GB HDDs and finally support the faster WiFi standard 802.11n rather than just the slower 802.11b/g that the PS3 has had equipped to date.  Obviously to benefit you would need to have an 802.11n router too.

Whichever size of HDD you pick the PS Move is said to come bundled.  While there is no mention of how many controllers or sub-controllers the bundles will include we should be safe to assume that a PS Eye will be in the box.  Guess we are likely to find out for sure tomorrow.

  1. And you know what a 500GB HDD would be useful for? On demand games from a premium PSN service. Bet ya! ;-)

    • or lots of porn………

      • I’ve got a 500GB USB drive for that.

      • I already have a 320 gig HD in the PS3 with lots of movies in there. As soon as Google TV gets release—-I am doubling the size of the HD.

    • Yup, pretty much what I thought.

    • Blu-Ray to HDD copy :D
or for the new PlayTV HD :P
my current ps3 phat has a 500GB hard drive for over a year now. i’m extremly happy that i never have to worry about drive space. even with lots of psn games, music, movies and playtv recordings.

a bundle with 500gb and move bundled with it would make the ps3 the ultimate family gaming, blu-ray, dvd-watching, tv recording-media center that sony always hoped for… if they advertise it in the right way of course AND if the price is right ;)

  2. my ps3 just broke so im gonna kind of say “yay i can buy this”.

    • My launch phat PS3 hasn’t broke, but if this is true I will buy it too!

      • If that’s true, you are seriously lucky.

      • Still got my launch day PS3 too but everyday that passes i get just a little bit more nervous about its lifespan.

      • mines still alive and kickin as well. still runs like new.

  3. makes sense. wonder what price it will be? would be great if Move was free with it

  4. make mine a TB. I will agree that my dead PS3 Phat didnt have enough space at 60gb. but my 120/250 is now enough for everything and a crap load of tv programs. but if they are revealing 2 new models and theyve gone from 250 to 500, does that mean a TB might not be far from the question?

    • A whole TB of space would be a right bugger to back up! I’d have to get (another) external HDD…

I’m sticking with my 320GB (self-upgraded) internal, but my phat PS3 (latest firmware 3.30) crashed after doing the nearly-four-hour backup – reason unknown. It’s now working fine, but alarm bells have been heard, even if they are only tinkling, rather than clanging, for now…

  5. Sony in a situation where they can trump any HD Microsoft want to sell due to price. Sony love knowing that we can simply swap a drive in and out ourselves (and source it from anywhere).

Bumping up the HDD size is always sound and I’m sure 1TB isn’t far off (maybe Christmas time?).

  6. Oh god……

  7. This sounds like a very good bundle! I’d definitely be interested in this!

  8. The 60gb’s wifi speed would max out about 4mbps (which is the same as my other 802.11g devices), but my Slim I got in January gets the full 10mbps that I’m on, same as my 802.11n laptop. So they already upgraded the wifi without telling anyone in the past.

    • You only get 10Mbps over 802.11n?! 802.11g will do up to 54Mbps. 802.11n will go up to 600Mbps with the right kit. Are you sure you’re connecting to an ‘n’ router?

PS3s currently on the shelves do not have 802.11n WiFi.

      • I think he means that is the speed (10Mbps) of his service from his provider

      • If Cadabena’s considering the speed seen via their ISP connection then ‘n’ is irrelevant, it’s not a measure of the PS3s WiFi performance. My old Dell laptop used to give me 16-18Mbps over 802.11g on my 20Mbps connection.

  9. If i didn’t already have a ps3, this would be what i’d buy. But the price wont justify an upgrade. Really hope they market this properly, just saying it only does everything isn’t good enough, you need to specifically state exactly what it can do. There’s so much going for ps3 now, they’re really starting to improve their position in the market. Shame they messed up the start of ps3’s life so badly. Hopefully they’ve now learned this lesson and will do better with ps4.

  10. I regulrly delete stuff i’m not using anymore so i always seem to have around 30gb free on my 160Gb phat. I could easily upgrade the hard drive myself but then there’s potentially more data to lose in a hard drive fail/ylod. I’ve already been there once and so i back-up regularly -did so last night actually. The ext HDD i use for back-up is 500gb so it looks like soon that won’t be enough..
