Not Many MGS Characters Will Return In Rising

Metal Gear Solid: Rising producer Shigenobu Matsuyama has commented to gamesâ„¢ about how Konami’s upcoming Raiden-focused Metal Gear game for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 won’t require players to be MGS aficionados to understand what’s going on. As the game is viewed as a fresh start, newcomers needn’t expect the usual convoluted cast of hundreds popping up and spouting reams of exposition about super AIs, the dissemination of memes or other such loopy notions about gene therapy or clandestine Philosophers/Patriots (or whatever) controlling the world. Matsuyama-sama assuages our fears by stating:

“We’re probably not going to show too many characters in Rising because, since it’s a new part of a series, we don’t really want to refer to and dwell upon the Metal Gear sago so much.

“We want newcomers to the game to come in and play freely without needing to know and understand the background of the whole Metal Gear Solid universe. We don’t want to have it all tied up with the story from MGS2 or MGS4 and make it too complicated.”

A Metal Gear Solid game that isn’t too complicated? Does Kojima know about this? Oh. No one has told Hideo, have they? Oh boy, are you in for a beating at the next Konami karaoke outing.

  1. Konami employee: Mt Kojima its done, take a look!

Hideo Kojima: Nope, needs more students murdering their mentors, codec beeps, people wetting themselves, nuclear weapons, nanomachines, secret societies, rapid aging oh and a general booster shot of epicness.

Konami employee:…..that was amazing, how did you think of all that?

Kojima: I’m the japanese equivalent of chuck norris.

    • Chuck Norris doesn’t agree with the Periodic Table. He only recognizes the element of surprise.

      • Chuck Norris doesn’t own a microwave, stove or oven, because revenge is a dish best served cold…

  2. will ,,, he need to focus on something he cant do like what Kojima did with the bluray :)

    • sorry i didn’t mean any fan-boy things

  3. I’m still not sol on this MGS after Solid Snake and Big Boss. I’m trying to view this as an entirely new game but having some tranferring of characters is making it difficult.

Oh one last thing MGS4 trophies.

    • I was nodding right up until the last sentence.

      • @Bio
        You don’t want MGS4 trohpies?

    • It’s not MGS though, its Metal Gear Rising so it is a new game, they’ve even changed the tag line. So it may be set in the same universe, but its a side-shoot, a fresh start as the guy is quoted saying. The one thing it definitely isn’t is MGS. It also isn’t after Solid Snake and Big Boss as I believe the story is set between MGS2 and MGS4.

      • This has been said before. The game’s official title is Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Not Metal Gear Rising. You can look it up if you don’t believe me! :)

      • Well, of course it’s Solid, it’s in 3d. The Tagline is what tell us if this is Metal Gear Solid with Tactical Espionage Action or MGS with Lighting Bolt Action. … or MGS with Comical Espionage Action… or even MGS using Your Potencial, our passion.

  4. I’m all set for this one and I’m cool with new characters. Start off a whole new storyline and maybe have a few throwbacks to the Snake characters. Have Raiden fight some crazy ninja who was trained by Ocelot, or have him fall in love with Sniper Wolf’s cousin. Oh and Snake better take over as the Colonel

  5. so its not real metal gear then…

    • No, and they never said it was going to be..

  6. The Metal Gears had become far too convoluted by the end, it is nice to see they are doing a bit of spring cleaning.

  7. I would’ve thought they’d focus on MGS2 at least a little bit, telling us how Raiden got into this whole robot ninja phase of his.
