Boom, Here’s The PlayStation Phone

“It’s hard to believe that what we’re looking at is real,” says Engadget (thanks, AJ), “but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you’ve long been waiting for.”

Yes, this is the PlayStation Phone, apparently. Engadget seem to think it’ll be running Android 3.0 (as expected) along with a customised Sony branded Market which, judging from the PSP-like controls, will be biased towards games.

Spec wise, you’re looking at a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and a 3.7 – 4.1 inch screen, and has a Micro SD slot. Controls wise it looks like a PSP, but with that multitouch pad thing in the middle.

Remember that we’re looking at what Engadget describe as a prototype here.

Over to you.

Update: Some sites are claiming Sony have said the phone is “fake”. Sony have told TheSixthAxis that they don’t comment on rumour or speculation.

  1. Design looks awesome. Plenty of time yet for them to get this right

    • noooooo!
I was hoping for something along the lines of this –

      • Mate can you please stop spamming this concept art for, wait for it…PSP2??

      • I was just trying to show what would have been a better design. I am aware the picture is of a PSP 2.
I didn’t think 2 posts would be spamming.

      • To be perfectly honest that design is terrible.

      • Wuntunzee, I’m sorry to say this…but… That looks like a piece of shit.

    • Yeah look how close the analogue sticks are to the edges of the device. That would be guaranteed thumb cramp inside of 10 minutes!

  2. Looking good, pleased that they’ve finally implemented two stick like devices, regardless of whether they are touchpads, sticks or (shudder) nubs.

  3. I used to work for Sony Ericsson, I wouldn’t get your hopes up yet. There are usually a few rounds of prototypes and a lot of devices can be buggy on initial release.

It’s a bit of a turnaround for Sony as they wanted to keep the Playstation name well away from SE in the past.

  4. This will be my next phone.

  5. One word…..YES!!!

  6. I want this quite badly but sorry to be a party pooper: With Android handily providing root access to the system this will be a pirates dream, therefore I can only imagine minimal 3rd party support (if any)

We all know iPhone & Android games can be pirated, the thing is its a lot of hassle to go to to save 59p or whatever but Sony games are a different matter; LBP, MNR, GT, etc

The only thing that worries me about availability is that it has been leaked that 2.3 will be the next Android release potentially pushing 3.0 impossibly far into the future.

My contract is up next week and I can wait a while to see if this appears but not forever as my phone is a heap of junk (thanks for borking it, Apple) Still, I’m pretty sure this will be as expensive as the iPhone4, whose pricetag plus high tier tariffs is off-putting.

Also 512mb of RAM could be limiting seeing as HTC have already released the Desire HD with 768mb of RAM.

    • I wouldn’t touch another Android phone after HTC abandoned the Hero, but this looks interesting. But yeah, that processor’s already outdated and the RAM is worrying. But it’s a prototype, so there’s plenty of room to improve.

      • I share the same feeling about Apple (unfortunately, as when everything worked it was great) after they’ve made my phone unusable with iOS4, then lied that iOS4.1 fixes everything. This has also affected all the £150 iPod Touch’s that they were selling right up to the new lineup was announced as recently as June I think, completely and totally making games unplayable. Theiving scum IMO, will never touch them again.

  7. Looking good! Already want one.

  8. Also, this ‘prototype’ is very close to this ‘mockup’ – http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/08/12/another-psp-phone-story/ Engadget?

  9. Let’s hope its not another N-Gage!

  10. Unless it’s a PSP2 phone it’s a bit pointless.

    • Yeah, not bothered about the PS phone, I’m saving my money for the PSP2.
