Epic: ‘PSP2 GPU 4x As Powerful As Any Portable We’ve Seen’

We’ve heard that it’s “as powerful as a PS3” but how does Sony’s new NGP mobile gaming device compare with the current (and upcoming) host of handhelds? Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, has chimed in with the ostensibly bombastic statement that, based on what he’s seen so far (and he’s seen a lot), “Sony’s multi-core GPU is roughly 4x as powerful as any portable we’ve previously seen.”

Does this mean it’s four times as powerful as, say, the iPhone 4? Not necessarily, as Sweeney is specifically referring to the NGP’s GPU. That said, it’s an impressive claim nonetheless. Sweeney went on to tease gamers by stating:

We’re very excited and think you will be stunned at what’s possible on Sony’s next generation portable platform.

Are you excited? We definitely are.

  1. I’ll take UT3 portable for those twin sticks please Tim.

    • Can’t wait for Monster Hunter Portable 3rd… but I wonder if the UK version or maybe any origional PSP will get a update to support twin-stick control.

      Would be cool..

  2. Just seen the uncharted demo at cvg, amazing, i want one

  3. that picture looks sweet. hope it looks like that.

    • Of course it will look like that, they wouldn’t announce it and show off a prototype, especially considering all the pictures they’ve sent out.

  4. I’ve resisted buying a PSP since the original came out – sometimes with the ‘help’ of my missus. I won’t be able to resist this though: I looks amazing, has those crazy specs and a library of AAA titles to come. I want it. Now.

What does ‘NGP’ stand for? Now Go Play?

    • *It* looks amazing – although I am pretty handsome if I may say so myself…

    • Next Generation Portable. They havent officially given it the PSP2 name yet.

  5. It looks so powerful!! now wheres the XMB???

    • Gone in favour of the “bubbles” you see above.

    • I hope the XMB isn’t that bubbly display we’re seeing on the screen right now.

      • Errrr, damn.

      • Me too, I don’t like the bubble interface, but considering how good it looks and how powerful it is, that’s only a minor gripe over it!

    • Trying to look more akin to the I-phone/ I-touch menu perhaps, looks like you even have the same ‘swipe the screen to see the next page of apps’ function as i-phone/touch too by the look of those 3 tiny bubbles to the left of the screen.

  6. I want it…

  7. NEED IT

  8. powwer doesn’t translate to profit.
Nintendo has never had the most powerful handheld, yet its sales are staggering. Forget power sony, remember gameplay and ‘fun’

    • Control…….

    • Which is why the most important addition is dual analog. 2 sticks would have made so may PSP games so much better.

  9. Jesus Christ I want a PSP2 so bad!

  10. Having seen the new ‘bubbles’ layout, i wouldn’t mind the PS3 having the same.

    • That would not work as well as the touch screen but with move it could work good but everyone does not have move.
