Pre-Owned Targeted By SOCOM 4 Pro

Sony are targeting the pre-owned market with the announcement of SOCOM 4 Pro. Apart from the usual DLC bobbins such as extra weapons those who buy the game new will have access to extra custom game types.

  • Community Day Classic– Suggested by members of Zipper Community Day 2011, CDC offers a medley of different maps that support 8-vs-8 “Classic” variations on Suppression, Uplink, Last Defense and Bomb Squad with faster movement and no ranged explosives of any kind
  • Last Defense Run ‘n Gun– Our incredibly fast-paced deviation from our Last Defense gametype that includes speedier player movement, reduced weapon damage, and limitations to sub-machine guns and shotguns only
  • SCRUM– A Suppression mod that offers a “Classic” rules-inspired list of features that includes no respawn, no Sniper Rifles, no Concussion, Poison Gas, or Frag Grenades, higher damage and faster character movement
  • Sniper Alley – Another 8-vs-8 variation on “Classic” Suppression that boasts higher damage values and weapon restrictions that allow players access to only Smoke and Poison Gas Grenades, Shotguns, and of course, Sniper Rifles

SOCOM 4 Pro will also have  ranked custom game queues and a couple of extra weapons. So far, nothing to extraordinary but there is one last twist;  Some of the future DLC including “multiplayer maps, various co-op additions and dedicated leaderboards” will only be available to those with the Pro package.

If you do decide to pick up SOCOM 4 second hand then you can purchase ‘Pro’ access for  $14.99 (or the proper money equivalent).

  1. Not a fan of this method of combatting the pre-owned market. Make a great game and people won’t want to trade it in – you’re just going to discourage customers who buy on release expecting a great MP only to find an average multiplayer at best (Dead Space 2, for example)

  2. tut tut, shame, wont be buying it anyway.

  3. Damn, I was going to pick this up second hand over the summer. Guess I just won’t be getting it then.

    • Hold out till it hits the £20.00 mark and get it then dude?

    • I doubt Sony will care that they aren’t going to be getting the money you wasn’t planning of giving them anyway.

  4. I want Warhawk 2…..

  5. Why has the mood towards this sort of thing changed lately, what did I miss? It’s not even an online pass like most games, more akin to PlayStation Plus.

    • It was looking fairly good, but then got a lot of indifferent press and reactions to the beta.
I’ll still be getting it a little down the line, I think, but it’s not on my day 1 list.

      • Defo later on down the line but not day one.

  6. My list of “not to buy” is getting bigger than my “Want” list. its their loss cause even if i bought a game pre-owned, if it was good i would buy the dlc ect.

  7. “what did I miss? It’s not even an online pass like most games, more akin to PlayStation Plus”

Personally, when I buy a game I would like to have 100% of the game however I decide to buy it (and I do buy all my games so why are gamers treated like this all of a sudden?). More and more nowadays you have devs holding back content specifically for DLC despite it being ready to ship at launch and its just a state of affairs that annoys me and a lot of other people

I guess publishers lose a lot of money to pirating but instead of trying to lessen that problem they seem to put it on legitimate gamers to make that cash back, and I just find that wrong

  8. future DLC will only be available to people who buy the pro package big fail right there you cant restrict dlc to just 1 type edition of a game dlc should be available to everyone

    • thats true, i like the VIP offer from DICE/EA, it makes sense

      • According to the link posted further below, there will be DLC which doesn’t need Pro as a prerequisite. (And possibly some which does, who knows?).

      • if I buy a game I expect to have access to all dlc not just 2 or 3 pieces besides publishers don’t make enough collectors/special editions to get enough sales out of it so if Sony think this is going to work it wont itl just back fire in their faces

      • it’s exactly the same as the vip code for BFBC2, it’s free content (when the game is bought new) but not when bought secondhand, don’t really know why people are attacking this game for this, it’s not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, just remember, if you’re going to buy it secondhand add 14.99 to the price you’re paying…or pick it up new (either at full price, or wait for deals)

it’s a damn good game, no matter what any review says.

  9. This is for the US nothing has been confirmed for the eu

    • Hey, you’re not wrong. This was announced in the US on Friday. If it was in the EU too, then I’d have expected a simultaneous announcement.
It’s like them slapping an extra couple skins as DLC in the US release of MS:A, but nothing in the EU.

    • Want to be the EU version wil be any different?

  10. Its articles like this that make me glad I’ve given up gaming for a few months. Getting very tired of being treated like a bad guy because I want to check out a game but don’t want to pay £40.99 for it! :|
