In a press release posted on the EU Blog, Sony has said that some PSN services will return this week, although the Store will be later.
Services up soon, then, include:
• Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
• This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
• Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
• Access to account management and password reset
• Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
• PlayStation®Home
• Friends List
• Chat Functionality
They also talk about the increased security measures, including a new firmware which will force a reset and will require access to the email address for that account OR access to the PS3 that account was set up on.
In addition, Sony have:
• Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
• Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
• Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
• Implementation of additional firewalls
To tempt people back onto the PSN, Sony are working to provide some adde value and goodies. These aren’t concrete yet, but for those that like bulletpointed lists, these will be based around PlayStation Plus and include:
• Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
• All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
• Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
It’s not apparent from the press release what the hackers actually got, we’ll probably never find out the exact details, but does the above satisfy you guys?
Let us know in the comments…

They are doing a lot more than some other companies have done after losing customer information and you have to respect that. Haters gonna hate but I think they are doing a pretty good job of damage control.
People will still be upset about the time it has taken to get this far, but objectively I understand Sony’s position and accept their explanation.
I’m a little concerned about needing the original console or valid email to reset password – I think some of my duplicate accounts I no longer have access to either. My main ones (Australian and US) I do though.
fattyuk
Well said.
BTW, I’m in the same boat as you, but you shouldn’t have duplicate accounts ;o)
Bladesteel
If you don’t have paid content on them I’d say it’s no big deal, if there is then it’s a problem.
I think sony should (if it’s technically possible) allow changing the password from another ps3 than the original if the logon hasn’t been used from the original for some time, that will sort out most of those that have replaced their consoles (for ylod and other reasons, unfortunately if your console ylod-ed the day before psn went down you’re still screwed).

Great, Sony is finally recovering from this big mess, Im suprised they were kind enough to compensate free PSN users as I didnt expect such a thing.
But my mind still wonders if Credit Card data was stolen or not, they have no evidence but cant rule out the possibility.
Anyways, thanks Sony for the free PS+ Subscription and the free download… thing.
Hopefully this will end at best with no Credit Cards taken.

For free PSN items linked to PS+. A nice gift from SONY would be Online Cloud Storage of Saved Data for FREE for ALL PSN users, that would be a nice gift! :) Failing that, a massive summer sale of 80% discounts across the PS Store….
fattyuk
That wouldn’t be a nice gift for us ps plusers though
Mike
I agree, I don’t mind the current offerings but if they start offering the main bread and butter features of PS+ then I’ll question why I’m paying for it and will put off members.
alonemusic
reading the statement the free content for playstation network users is separate from the playstation plus sub, so I doubt its going to expire.
fattyuk
Any content you get from ps plus expires when you subscription runs out.
TURRICAN-808
Thats the aspect of PS+ that puts me off. It’s not a permanent download offer. So, here’s my claim: is what SONY is offering, a bit fake? I fully admit we don’t know all the details of the offer yet, but to me the recent PS+ offer potentially has ‘a heart of glass’. Here’s why, you enjoy the free goodies, only to be told a month later that the offer has expired and just like fattyuk said, “you need to fork out another 40 quid” to get your downloads back!!
alonemusic
yes, but the free content in the ‘welcome back’ on the blog reads free content AND the 30 days of psn plus as a separate point. I would assume that means everyone gets some content free, then anything from psn plus, that will obviously expire unless they renew
fattyuk
Were talking about ps plus not the other offer.
alonemusic
das cool yo, just a few comments seem to be saying the ‘free content’ will expire and the article above says ‘ these will be based around PlayStation Plus and include..’ which could lead to confusing conversations, like this for example.
JesseDeya
That’s not entirely true fatty, some content expires, some is forever.
fattyuk
The content you spend money on ie discounted content you keep. Any free content expires when your subscription runs out.
Watchful
..unless the ‘free’ content it happens to be DLC. In which case you can keep it. Like Jesse says, not everything expires.
yourwifemy-kids
its nice to be filled in on all info but we stioll havent got an exact date for online play but on tuesday sony did say it would be back on within a week so we have till tuesday really but cant see it like someone said a while ago it might be good for sony to have this happen to them kick up the rear should of been done along time ago
MegaBonez
I want a t-shirt for my Home avatar that reads “The PSN was down and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!”
iamtdogg
Still a couple of things unanswered for me at the moment (and have tweeted to ask)…
* will we be able to update trophies? (not mentioned in release)
* will additional DLC codes that come with games work? ( i have codes for additiional content for Portal, MK, Socom etc)
elpablo79
I’m not sure the codes will work until the store is up, which it states will be later
JesseDeya
The big issues eh?
Trophies I’d say yes, they have nothing to do with the store and there is no reason they wouldn’t be re-enabled at the same time the multiplayer aspect of PSN returns.
DLC probably not. Normally when you enter a code it takes you to the store and you download the DLC from there. The DLC is also added to your download history at that time. If the store isn’t up, I doubt you will be able to download DLC.
JesseDeya
Beaten by a minute ;)
JesseDeya
Shit, I just winked at myself. Weird.
iamtdogg
Yeah I know they aren’t the big issues but as far as I’m concerned they were the only things I still didn’t have an answer to :)
elpablo79
@JessDaya: Booyah! And winking at yourself shows how comfortable you are ha ha
iamtdogg
Oh i also noted on their release the fact they will be offering some deal for id protection … probably like 90 days free or something like that, but it’s a start
MadJunkBoy
I’m satisfied…
