In a press release posted on the EU Blog, Sony has said that some PSN services will return this week, although the Store will be later.
Services up soon, then, include:
• Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
• This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
• Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
• Access to account management and password reset
• Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
• PlayStation®Home
• Friends List
• Chat Functionality
They also talk about the increased security measures, including a new firmware which will force a reset and will require access to the email address for that account OR access to the PS3 that account was set up on.
In addition, Sony have:
• Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
• Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
• Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
• Implementation of additional firewalls
To tempt people back onto the PSN, Sony are working to provide some adde value and goodies. These aren’t concrete yet, but for those that like bulletpointed lists, these will be based around PlayStation Plus and include:
• Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
• All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
• Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
It’s not apparent from the press release what the hackers actually got, we’ll probably never find out the exact details, but does the above satisfy you guys?
Let us know in the comments…

Thanks Sony.

Succinct and I agree. :)
Nice to see they’re doing something for the consumers because they obviously don’t have to.
The bit I’m most interested in though is that bit in the middle there about extra security measures, that’s where I’d like the majority of Sony’s focus to go.

“To tempt people back onto the PSN, Sony are working to provide some adde value and goodies”
Regarding this comment, I’m not a f*cking child.
Giving me a cookie or two and telling me to ‘Run along and play now’ is not going to regain my trust.
fattyuk
lol funniest post of this thread!!
alonemusic
your trust is just one thing they need to get. Think of the developers who haven’t (and won’t be able to) push their products on the store for a month. Sales will then be down for months after, which could bankrupt and turn companies away from the platform as a whole… That is altogether more worrying because, I want to play game on my games console, and I chose Playstation because of the unique catalog, which could be easily shoved away by this.

Seriously, for all the whinging I’d love to know what people would actually want for Sony to ‘regain their trust’?
They have told you how they failed, apologised, promised to make the system stronger and are giving you compensation for the incident. Would you prefer a blowjob?
AnNoYiN__sPo0n
For me, it will take time. That is all.
yourwifemykids
a bj would ease the pain im in
fattyuk
Btw when I said funniest comment, I ment childish.
Time will tell? You talk like you’re wifes left you for another bloke and then you’ve got back together and time will heel the trust!
JesseDeya
This is weird.
We’ve got a Fatty, Your Wife and My Kids all in an Annoying Spoon and we’re somehow mixing cheating spouses and blowjobs.
I’m out.

Well obviously my initial trust in their ability to keep my personal details safe, was misplaced. So I no longer trust them completely. Their description of their efforts to tighten security puts back some of the trust, but not all of it.
What I would like to see, in a few months time, is a published report by a professional third party (or more than one) that have done penetration testing (unannounced to the day to day staff) and then a security audit of the PSN. And the assurance that the exercise will be repeated, again with specifics about time kept from the staff so they don just shape up when they know it’s coming, and the results published (obviously after any issues found have been fixed).
fattyuk
Blade steel……. No one has my bank details via PSN…….. Why? Has someone got yours……. If they haven’t then what’s the problem?
tyrant161
I’ll just bet that knowing my luck……i’ll probably already own the free game that they decide to give away or it’ll be one of the worst games ever like pain…which i bought and then deleted within 10 minutes because its pants.
PoolieMike
Nothing wrong with PAIN.

“They also talk about the increased security measures, including a new firmware which will force a reset and will require access to the email address for that account OR access to the PS3 that account was set up on.”
Does this mean I’ll need to activate the accounts on my ps3?
Winkle
I was hoping that they would reset your amount of activated PS3’s. Still no positive answer on this. As I’ve lost 2 :(

Which didn’t work. Just wait until some subs it an put up on YouTube. Hopeful SCEE and SCEA will release there own video about this issue. Just watch first Pusle when PSN store reopens.
Sony needs to groble lot more. Sony shouldn’t put this issue under table at E3.

From the post above:
“will require access to the email address for that account OR access to the PS3 that account was set up on”
And the relevant text directly from the press release:
“As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.”
[My emphasis added in both cases.]
It’s not entirely clear if it must be the PS3 the account was created on or simply one of your five ‘active’ PS3s on the account. For practical reasons I would put money on the latter.
And afterwards make sure you change the email address on the account to a real one, just in case.
teflon
The wording definitely suggests that it has to be on an active PS3 rather than the PS3 you created the account on. For one thing, maybe 1 in 3 PSN account holders didn’t create their account on the PS3…
You’ll still need to have the account password, in order to access the password change facility, even if you’re on the active PS3.
