Some PSN Services To Return ‘This Week’

In a press release posted on the EU Blog, Sony has said that some PSN services will return this week, although the Store will be later.

Services up soon, then, include:

• Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
• This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
• Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
• Access to account management and password reset
• Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
• PlayStation®Home
• Friends List
• Chat Functionality

They also talk about the increased security measures, including a new firmware which will force a reset and will require access to the email address for that account OR access to the PS3 that account was set up on.

In addition, Sony have:

• Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
• Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
• Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
• Implementation of additional firewalls

To tempt people back onto the PSN, Sony are working to provide some adde value and goodies. These aren’t concrete yet, but for those that like bulletpointed lists, these will be based around PlayStation Plus and include:

• Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
• All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
• Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

It’s not apparent from the press release what the hackers actually got, we’ll probably never find out the exact details, but does the above satisfy you guys?

  1. Hang on if the store won’t be back up untill the end of the month and we get 30 days free for PS+ won’t it be useless as we won’t be able to access the freebies?
I am glad that they have confirm(kinda) a date when it will go back up.I just hope the servers can handle the intial surge of People logging in at once.

    • Longshot of the day….

      Drumroll……

Perhaps youll get ps plus for 1 month when the store is working!??

      • I have to say I thought something similar here but what about the people who have subscribed to PS+? Will they get refunded for the downtime where they got no benefits?

      • I was not the only one who thought this. SCEE is known for their lack of common sense.:P Can you please stop posting comments on this article as you have posted enough times. If you keep posting the amount of comments that you do then you risk getting banned. Have a happy day.:)

      • It’s not about the amount of posts, Steven, as long as they add to the discussion. It’s the content of posts, so no need to talk about banning atm, TSA doesn’t like to abuse its ban hammer :P

      • BTW 365 days of ps plus is 39.99. Which works out to be 9.12pence each day…. 12 days at this is £1.04.

    • why would I need reimbursed for? As long as all the content is still there for this month when the psn is back then I haven’t lost anything? Although I do downloaded everything the day it comes out anyway?

      • because you have been unable to use a serivce you have paid for.I would be very p*ssed off if i couldn’t use a service i have paid for.Not everyone downloads everything on the day of release, a few people may wait a few weeks or are unable to access their PS3 for a period of time.PSN went down during the easter period so i would imagine that a lot of people weren’t able to access their PS3s before it went down.

      • We’re unable to use the service where we just get discounted products really. It’s not like XBL where we pay just to be online.

The only thing that we have really missed out on is what is already provided free. Really, Sony don’t owe us anything as long as they keep this months content on for next months update on the PS+ store.

Although, I ain’t complaining about free swag :-D

      • Actually Mike, missing the cloud saves did annoy me somewhat. I bought MLB 11 in the US while I was there and put a good 12 hours into a pitcher. The saves are protected so I can’t save them to USB, only the cloud. As a PS+ subscriber I was planning to save them to the cloud then retrieve them when I got home, but as the PSN was still down when I left I couldn’t do that.

I’ll not die in a ditch over it, but it IS a feature I pay extra for and couldn’t use. I know Sony will come good though, they’ll extend our subs which is fine with me.

      • but I’ve already used the service I have paid for? So why would they reimburse me? If I hadn’t downloaded everything I wanted to buy but had to wait 2 weeks until they released what I did download in the first place so what? You want reimbursing because you couldn’t access what you wanted for 2 weeks?? If you don’t mind me asking…. But what did you want to download from ps plus that was so important?? Please list, and we’ll figure the monetary value of thus products and the daily value of these products via a daily value as there only on hold for 10+ days. So please list and we can figure out how much you/I should be reimbursed?

      • Any reply you might give the lone steven, please state what you wanted to download from ps plus… Then I should be able to follow you as I’m a ps plus member myself, but find it hard to follow of what I’ve been stitched up on? I pay a yearly subscription, not weekly?

      • BTW 365 days of ps plus is 39.99. Which works out to be 9.12pence each day…. 12 days at this is £1.04.

      • @fatty,I didn’t say that i wanted to reimbursed, but there are some people who think that they are entitled. Some people may have brought Plus the day it went down.I would imagine that there are hundreds of people signing up every day. FFS,did you really have to ask people to put down what they wanted to download from Plus when replying to me? Can we please not argue over this as i can see this turning into an argument very quickly.

      • So what a ya moaning about lol? Nuff said

      • Btw I asked what you wanted to download? Not anyone else just you, as you’re the one kicking up a fuss about it all lol.

      • Btw the lone Steven sorry if I’m being argumentative been drinking allnday watchingnthe football sorry xx

      • i just realised i misread your reply.Whoops,I will apologise for the misunderstanding.*Bows down for a period of 10 minutes*
I didn’t realise that i was kicking up a fuss.I think reading Youtube comments has damaged my brain a bit.:P

  2. I’m glad PSN is up this week, just hoping the store is not going to be the end of May, that would be quite sad.

Surprised the amount of stuff in the “welcome back” program, that’s a lot more then expected.

“Because the freebie content will be different by region, Sony was hesitant to put a price on it, but Hirai estimated “a few thousand yen” worth of free downloads. So like $20-25 or so?”

    Not bad.

  3. Hope that quietens you all down you moaning lot .

    • Has been rather quiet so far I wouldn’t give it too long though

  4. This is very good news and I have to say I hadn’t realised how much of my playing was through online. The extra security seems good and the promises of future rewards, tempting. The Store in a monththough is a long time to wait.

  5. I hope Vidzone is back soon, my kids love it!

    • Interestingly, Netflix on PS3 has continued to work throughout this ordeal. I was just in the US and my gf and I were able to still use it despite not being able to sign into PSN. Not so with MLB+ though, which is odd because it’s not owned by Sony (unlike VidZone), so the requirement to be signed into PSN seems unnecessary.

  6. I just want my warhawk back

  7. I’m going to say it:
I’m still not sold on SONY’s potentially ‘free’ offerings. Only when I get on to the store and see for myself will I be able to judge properly these (considered) ‘free’ goodies.

    • What exactly do you want?

      • He wants free playstation plus, free cloud saving and 80% off everything in the store

      • Hi, 80% sumer sale on PS Store, i said in the previous page that I’d like to have the PS+ Online Cloud based saves system for ALL PSN users for FREE. However, that would make current PS+ members narked off, so it’s most unlikely…
The main reason i’m skeptical is that are we really getting free content? please read my other comments in this article to understand where i’mn coming from.

      • But it’s winter down here. Can we have a winter sale? ;)

I pay for PS+ but it wouldn’t bother me if everyone got cloud saving… I think it would help promote the PS3 in general and that’s a good thing for me as a (primarily) PS3 gamer.

I guess my point is, why do you even feel _entitled_ to free content? I mean I understand why Sony will offer it, they need all the good PR they can get, but if they offer you monetary compensation for changing credit cards, offer you identity theft protection monitoring, secure the system and apologise profusely (as they have now offered/done) then what entitles you to even more?

Seems some people consider themselves hard done by at the drop of a hat – might be a Gen Y thing I just don’t understand.

    • Well considering that Sony can’t change th price for a lot of there content without the devs permission thats hardly likely. There giving you a really good freebie when the psn is up! If you can figure out what is obviously

    • Well said Jesse, I think some people think just because they cant play COD online for 10+ days then there Owed the world!

  8. Although they’re taken a long time for having it up, well done.

Next goodwill gesture: Free Cross-Game VoIP Chat :D

  9. I sadly don’t have my original PS3 as it died a sorry death, but thankfully I still have the email account I registered it with. Also, my mate got a PS3 for his birthday so I’m guessing he may still be able to sort an online account, just not shop?

    • I’m fairly certain that’s not what they meant, but rather a PS3 on which your PSN account has been activated… Feels like they’ve worded their way into “added security” there.

      • Ah right, makes more sense like that. Thanks!

  10. this is great news. they’ve apologised which they should and they’re letting us know what they’re securing and how they want to repay us. I’m pleased with this.
