PS3 Fires Back Up, No Sign Of Europe, Yet

As Dan posted overnight, if you switch on your PS3 and navigate over to the System Software update section, you’ll be able to grab a brand new firmware update – 3.61.

At the moment, this is optional for us Europeans – the PSN itself is still, at the time of writing at least, down.  However, by grabbing the firmware now you’ll be in better shape for getting back online when it fires back up.

When will that be?  Well, it’s already started happening – some users in the States are already back up and running, and whilst the process will be a ‘phased’ one we’re not expecting Europe to be too far behind.

So, first up – grab the firmware.  We’re hoping that Europe will be back in the game later today or tomorrow and then – finally – we’ll all be able to play some online gaming.

But before that, you’ll need to reset your password.  Once PSN is back, and you’ve got the firmware, you’ll be able to attempt to sign in (with your old username and password) at which point the PS3 will force you to reset your password.

  1. PS.Blog EU is dead, PSN unavailable, password changing impossible. More communication snafu from Sony.

    As for the rumours about a massive overhaul of XMB features, forget it. Firmware 3.61 is as identical as usual.

    • Do you honestly think Sony would have had time, during the downtime, to prepare an XMB revamp as well as securing the PSN?

      Let me know when you arrive back in the real world.

      • Nevertheless, it lifted our spirts in a time of need. an overhaul is on the cards (near future.) Happened previously, slightly after 360 got a new dashboard, but sony is a bit busier atm to what it would’ve been.

      • That was timed for the new Slim though, it’s not like we have a Slimmer Slim coming.

      • I still thinks it’s logical, perfect time for a change, add to that, 360s’ revamp. Have a strong gut feeling, but we’ll have to wait & see:)

  3. Ho hum. Sony were never going to please everyone anyway and there will always be someone out there who’s glass is half empty.

    I’m just pleased things are moving on. I’ve downloaded the firmware update and will wait patiently for the time when I can change my password and buy something from the store.

    If necessary I will don a curly black wig, wave their arms in the air and tell everyone to “calm down!” in my best scouser accent – which always ends up sounding like a constipated Dubliner for some reason.

  6. As much as I’m excited about the online coming back, its really only the store that I want. May purchase the AC Brotherhood DLC, and of course download all the free goodies!

  7. Europe might not be up but its official! according to sony the entire USA and Canada has been restored!

  9. Question…i am an existing user but had to format the drive while psn was down, so i will have to pick sign in as an existing user when psn is back up, will i be able to do this straight away or have to wait for psn etc? I have downloaded and installed the firmware update already.

  10. There are rumours that some scandanavian users are back online. Hopefully UK will not be too far behind.

    Looking forward to some Brink online.

    • I will be keen to read, ps3 users’ response re: online. Was so tempted to buy, but on hold for now.

      • Yes the same for me, also now that LA Noire is out this week it maybe on hold a lot longer
