Tweak It: PSN Store

Last week’s Tweak It prompted many more comments than we expected.  Asking you how you would tweak the PS3’s GameOS to improve its existing capabilities you all had a lot of great ideas.  Having read through all your suggestions here are my top three:

  • “Notification display: change so you can have All, Only Messages or Off.” ~ sideshow
  • “Automated trophy sync.” ~ Kennykazey, musicmonkey, Awayze, hazelam
  • “Game independent screenshot feature.” ~ hazelam

This week we would like to know how you would change Sony’s PlayStation Network Store.  From our gamer’s perspective the PSN Store is where we go to access the latest downloadable goodies whether they be trailers, DLC or games.  As the key non-retail place where we go to spend our hard-earned pennies and cents the Store should be a welcoming place.

From Sony’s perspective they should be trying to make the Store as easy to use as possible, to make those impulse purchases easier and quicker.  Not only that, it is their shop window where they should be doing all they can to encourage us to visit often and linger longer as we browse the virtual shelves.

There were hints back in March that Sony were working on a Store redesign, followed by rumours earlier this month that a new Store design is already being tested.  Changes are likely coming then, but it may not be too late for Sony to listen to suggestions.  Here are a couple to get you started:

  • A page on the Store that lists only the DLC for the games that you already own.  The Xbox’s Games Marketplace does this already, but it could be taken one step further and leave out of the list any DLC you already have and any games that you have all the DLC for.
  • Dynamic themes on the Store often have a ‘Preview’ button which essentially shows you a ‘trailer’ for the theme.  The pages for the games also should feature a preview/trailer button so there is no need to go hunting elsewhere on the Store for them.

Over to you, our readers.  We know that you would like to see lower prices, so let’s take that as a given.  What else could Sony do to the Store to encourage you to spend your money there and make it a nicer place to visit?

  1. there already is a preview of new dynamic themes. its basically a video of someone scrolling through the different menus and show off all the button designs.

what I’d like to see on the store is a option to return games (in a time limit) if you don’t like them. the only problem is that the time limit would have to be quiet short as most games downloadable games you can complete in a couple of hours. say something like 30 minuets.

  2. How about actually getting it to work properly.

Week after week there are issues with wrong prices on single games, bundles. Trial games who doesn’t unlock properly, retail games on psn which can’t use save games from the disc version and so on. Plus content which vanishes, plus users who loose their games.

And the worst part, is the total lack of response from Sony on the blog and when contacting support. The lack of feedback to frustrated customers, who just wants to use MONEY, is baffling.

  3. heres an idea all the missing psone games put them up!

  4. Filtering options for the download list, I’ve got over 500 items on mine and it’s a huge bugger to sift through.

  5. 1. Make demos a requirement.
    2. Get rid of all the avatar / trailer fluff being all dumped on one day.
    3. Allow text on user reviews.
    4. Proper searching.
    5. Pay TGC more money so they can lots of staff making Jenova Chen’s mad ideas reality quicker.

    • 3 – i was thinking about that too but i’m not sure any developers would want any clearly negative reviews alongside their game at point of sale – as much as they would appreciate the glowing ones! ;)
      5 – Yes!

  6. Oh yeah, btw guys, if someone’s country is not supported by the Store you can’t reset your passwords ever since the PSN got hacked. You can’t log into the Playstation websites as well or anything that goes through them (like Steam, so no free Portal 2)

    • Really?!! God damn, I can’t believe Sony would treat customers like this. The PSN hack has sadly shown how less control and how unprofessional Sony are in some areas.

https://store.playstation.com/login.gvm is still down also, ridiculous.

I hope they have totally rebuilt their internal company structure for PS4, because lots of the current one is clearly failing.

  7. Might sound like a strange one but I like listening to music off my PS3 hard-drive. I want to be able to go into the store and not have the music playing stop. I would spend more time browsing the PSN store of I could still listen to my own music off the PS3.

  8. Group games and their demos together.
If you find a game you like, there should be a button to download the demo or trailer if it is available. The user shouldn’t have to search through demo menus and trailer menus to find this content.

  9. Give downloaded videos readable names.
All downloaded videos must have a thumbnail. Why isn’t this the case already?

  10. Yay, my name is in the article, proud moment for me xD

I wouldn’t really change the PSN Store, its soo pretty.

The only things I would like is:-

Top Downloaded (Weekly and All Time) for all games and each game category.
Ability to sort out Downloaded stuff by Title rather than just Date

I’d also want it tweaked so there wouldn’t be pauses when pushing “Circle” to go back and you have to wait before the loading icon stops.

    • Also Text Reviews and a review system so you can reply to someone’s comment like on Amazon.

Also I’d like EVERY PS3 game to be in a “PS3 Games Review” section so we can review a game we bought and post a review for a future buyer.
