WeView: DiRT 3

Well hopefully some of you will be getting down and dirty this week in our DiRT 3 Tournament, so I thought I’d take advantage of that and see what you had to say about the game. I mean we’ve covered arcade racers and Gran Turismo 5, so it’s only fair that rallying gets a chance to shine.

Of course DiRT 3 has gone beyond just rallying now, with the addition of Gymkhana spicing things up a little. It was something we were pretty positive about in our review of the game, although it wasn’t the only the aspect that impressed us. In fact scoring an 8/10 it’s safe to see we were pretty pleased with the game overall, having this to say about it:

There’s a lot to like about DiRT 3 – it controls superbly (twitchy and direct but without losing the sense that there’s some serious physics going on) and, once you dial down the assists, actually offers a surprisingly deep, technical ride.

It never pretends to be a sim, though – tuning is basic and the cars come as they are – but it’s certainly not using cheap arcade mechanics either, instead somewhere in-between the two as the series always has. DiRT 2 fans will dig this the most, but the new Gymkhana mode will attract a whole new audience too.

So we enjoyed Codemasters newest outing but how about you? Did you love it or hate it? Well if you’ve got something to say about it just head over to the forums and leave us your thoughts on the game. Whilst I’m not going to discount longer reviews, please remember that the aim is for short, snappy opinions. More than that I simply don’t have the time to wade through longer reviews, so if you want to have your opinion included in the verdict post try to keep it short.

Once you’ve written your review make sure you give it a score on the Buy It, Bargain Bin It, Rent It, Avoid It scale. Remember, if you want your score and opinion included in Monday’s verdict post you need to have it done by Sunday afternoon, otherwise I’ll have written it and you’ll be left out in the cold.

  1. I just ordered it with zavvi (it’s pretty cheap there right now, 18 pounds if I’m not mistaken).

    • Even cheaper at the moment, £15 and a few pennies :O Still can’t really afford it this month though even at that price :(

  2. I already own it for Xbox360 but i have ordered it yesterday for the PS3 in Zavvi. for 18£ it’s almost a gift xD I love the game soo much that i will finish it again :D

  3. shame i dont have this game, just bought F1 2010, so no more games until Resistance 3, looking forward to the verdict though

  4. I’m playing through it at the moment, haven’t gone online yet but it’s diverting until something better comes along. I do feel I spent a lot of time looking at triangles whilst its loading though

I picked it up for £19 which I think is about the right price. There is a lot of DLC which will cost you extra – oh and the guy constantly trying to get you to upload your footage to YouTube gets old very fast !

  5. Dirt 3 your time (for reprimand) has come! :)

  6. Interested to see what the general view is. Will try and write mine tonight if I get time.

  7. It’s uttery fabulous….enough said. (well, perhaps I will explain that in the forum!)

    • There’s one main omission from the game.

      • Enjoyment? ;) Just kidding though my WeView may not be so positive as others.

      • You may be surprised, there are no ‘Buy It’s yet.

  8. I would be interested in some of these views actually – Hopefully someone covers if you have to modify your vehicles in any way, as that would put me off.

I just wanna get in & race.

    • No car modification required. It only allows basic setup tweaks anyway (brake balance, ride height, top speed/acceleration, etc) but they are totally unnecessary. I played through the entire single player campaign on default settings with no problems (the only things you might want to tweak to your liking are assists and AI difficulty). I don’t even bother tweaking setups for online.

    • There’s no vehicle customization, you get a choice of liveries. The car tuning is simple but most race with default setting.

    • No modification s as in adding parts, but you can, if you wish, adjust setups, these have much less effect than in other games though.

      • Ah good stuff – Thanks for the responses guys.

That’s settling to know, as i haven’t got the foggiest when it comes to what crankshaft i need & what the top whatsamaflip is!!

  9. One of the best racing games out, and I’ve been a speed junky since Road Rash on Sega Genesis. Fun factor is through the roof, and the online just makes an already good game, better.

If you don’t have it yet, I strongly recommend you get it.

  10. DiRT3…

I enjoy it, for me, it is a huge improvement over the first two DiRT games, which I disliked, you feel a little more connected the brakes aren’t as shockingly good and the presentation and content is much more to my liking.

Saying that it always saddens me that it’s not a pure rally game, I would love that and the WRC game just didn’t do it for me. It is a lot better but things I would like to see improved are, more unique rally stages that don’t have copy and paste sections, narrow roads, akin to those found on the Monte Carlo DLC and a more advanced physics model that was a bit more realistic.

I realise this is a pipe dream as the game sells well and is popular as is, but hey, it is only an opinion.

Oh yeah, the DLC amount and cost sucks.

    • Yeah I don’t appreciate all the DLC they released. I would have liked some of them to be on the CD itself. Some people can’t afford those little things that make the game a better experience.
