Platinum Games Developing Metal Gear Rising

The VGA trailer for Metal Gear Rising (note the lack of ‘Solid’) has been leaked, confirming Platinum Games as developer. Previous games by Platinum include Bayonetta and Vanquish.

The trailer was nuked almost immediately, however I’ve seen it and it’s as far from a stereotypical Metal Gear game as you can possibly get. Very Bayonetta-like.

We’ve added some screencaps of the trailer above, to give you a taste of just how sharp Raiden’s blade is.  Yes, that’s a Metal Gear he’s slicing through whilst jumping into the air and being terribly fancy.  Snake would not be impressed.

It also combines “revenge” and “vengeance” into ‘revengeance’, which is… neat? No doubt we will have the official trailer later on during the VGAs.

  1. It’s not Solid enough to hold my attention.

  2. Platinum & PS3 = Butchered Port…

Remember Bayonetta on PS3 it was the bastard child of the xbox version… I don’t have high hopes for this & the dialogue was awful, “Revengeance” WTF!?

    • There was a pretty fast patch that cleared all that slowness up. And the game was fine after that.
It’s not like there was a “no fix” Bethesda patch, or no patch at all…

    • Not necessarily; Vanquish’s lead platform was PS3, it ran just fine :)
I’m with you on Revengeance, though. *shudders*

    • Man, Vanquish had AA and ran brilliantly.

  3. It was never a Metal Gear Solid, I don’t know why they ever called it that in the first place. I remember having that argument on here when it was first announced.

I don’t mind them making spin offs like this as long as we get a proper MGS sequel at somepoint, as this definitely is not for me and doesn’t seem like it will be anywhere near the same league as MGS.

    • Can’t be worse than Portable Ops.

  4. I’m actually more willing to buy it now, than I were before I saw this trailer.

I like these crazy asian hyper hack ‘n slashes, instead of those borefests like that (IMO) very overrated GoW…

    • Ditto

God of war is hardly exciting, will be looking forward to MGR.

  5. I was quietly confident about Rising. Emphasis on the ‘was’. When MGS2 came out I hadn’t played more than half an hour of MGS1 on PS1 before I deemed it too hard and turned it off confined to my PS1 games shelf where it still sits today (although it has been played a good few times since). I have never been, therefore, one of these people who thought MGS2 was ruined by the introduction Raiden as the protagonist, and wasn’t bothered about him getting his own game once more. But from this trailer, the game seems far too Beyonetta-ish, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were entirely playable with one button! Also, I’m not normally a graphics whore, but this game looks far infererior to MGS4 which, as the latter game will have been released for years prior by the time Rising hits shelves, is quite an acheivement. I don’t know if this is due to the game being multiuplatform, but I doubt it. I think this is the first MG installment I will not be investing in. Good thing I have the HD trilogy to look forward to next year containing Peace Walker which I have yet to play. So at least I’ll have one true MGS experience. Kojiima would do well to announce any ideas for MGS5 though, if such ideas exist… which we all know they do. Kojima will never truly leave that series. Especially when there is drivel like this proving that it cannot be done properly without him anyway.

    • I don’t have a direct comparison but if they cut back on the graphics it’s probably because Rising seems to have much more going on onscreen than MGS4.

  6. Something about that trailer gave me a cheesy, Steven Seagal, B movie-ish vibe to it, and not in a good way. The dialogue was awful, and all the captions (Reveangance WTF) made it worse. I know it’s not MGS but expected more from something MG related.

  7. I thought it looked cool! haha. Shame I find hack n slash games VERY mundane.

  8. lol you can tell Kojima has nothing to do with this game.

  9. ignoring the fact they’ve just remade Devil May Cry with Raiden taking dante’s role, but they’ve got the same problem games have with weapons like he wields, the same thing the star wars games have.

you have this weapon that can cut through just about anything, then you get the rank and file bad guys only taking a little bit of damage from it until you’ve beaten them up a bit at which point you can suddenly dice them into meaty chunks.

  10. To be honest I never really got into the MGS franchise so there’s nothing they can ruin for me. Looking at the trailer without a history, I gotta say I quite liked what I saw.
