According to Rock, Paper, Shotgun , Obsidian will help develop Wasteland 2 on the condition that inXile Entertainment’s Kickstarter reaches $2.1 million.
Speaking to RPS, Obsidian’s Chris Avellone said:
“Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance. While I’ve worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual successor to the Fallout franchise is a honor.”
The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter is currently sitting at $1,678,152 with 17 days left until the end of the fundraiser. The initial goal was to reach $900,000.
Brian Fargo, of InXile, also spoke to RPS saying:
“I have a history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay’s Black Isle studios. Together we created some of the greatest RPG’s of all time, from Fallout 1 & 2 to titles like Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment.
Obsidian has an incredible library of story, dialog and design tools that they have used to create hits like Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and of course, Fallout: New Vegas.
Regardless of the tech we use to develop the game, experience with these tools will help us efficiently design the game without wasting time and resources on the tools needed for development.”
The original Wasteland released way back in 1988 and the story involved living in a post nuclear war that had taken place between the USA & the Soviet Union. The game is sometimes cited as the predecessor of the ‘Fallout’ series.

It sounds brilliant, potentially. What platform would it be released on?
OriginalJonty (Aran Suddi)
At the moment I think PC & Mac.

I don’t really do any gaming on those platforms but it definitely sounds interesting enough to keep an eye on.
Sympozium
It’ll probably be that just that for now, can’t see it being on another platform.

That is kind of Obsidain seeing as Wasteland inspired the Fallout Series. But from Obsidian’s recent record with Gaming, it may be a bit buggy, unless Obsidian is planning to handle the publishing side of thing as well as help out with the odd bit of coding.
I wonder if Obsidian still has the Fallout 1&2 engine as i think Wasteland would be suited to that kind of gameplay and it would be unique today.
