What We Played #55

Chambers 21st Century Dictionary defines “raise the roof” as either “to make a great deal of noise or fuss” or alternatively as “to become very angry”. There have been times when either could be validly applied to our venerable lord and master Peter but this week he provides a third definition.

You see, his Minecraftian “huge feast hall now has a roof”.  Up next on his list of building tasks is to lay a nice wooden floor and we can only hope he won’t be off to a virtual Wickes for a bulk buy of cheap laminate.  We expect nothing less than the finest oak, lovingly polished to a spectacular hard-wearing sheen.

When not building a stately pile, no doubt replete with a pair of golden thrones, he has appropriately been playing New Soccer Star on his iPad.  The RPG-like career mode has proved “very compelling” despite some “questionable design choices”.

[drop]”Such as?”, I hear you ask.  Peter?  “Like how the option to have a girlfriend is entirely based on how many expensive items you’ve bought.”  Anything else? “Keeping her happy consists of buying her gifts and taking her on holiday.”

The cynical side of me suggests that’s may not be entirely unrealistic.  One thing I’m not sure I want to know how he discovered, and which will probably keep Tuffcub from playing the game, is that “there’s no option for having a boyfriend at all”.  Oh.  Moving swiftly on.

Despite having avowed to clear his gaming backlog and continuing to make some headway with Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom a leisurely stroll down the high street has left Jim with six new games to play.  Of those six Starhawk and Dragon’s Dogma have received the most attention.

Starhawk measurably improved once he realised that it “favours the tactician and not so much the skilled marksman”.  Investing in the build side of the games Build and Battle system has seen him “enjoying [the game] a lot more”.

Dragon’s Dogma similarly hasn’t been a perfectly smooth ride with “an abundance of absent features and difficulty spikes” doing their best to mar a game that has otherwise been a pleasant surprise.  “It’s a unique action RPG with plenty of potential leading into next gen” he concludes.

His AS exams behind him, Toby has “dived back into Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception“.  Though the hidden, bullet-absorbing, kevlar weave concealed beneath some of the goons’ suits “occasionally irritates” (perhaps they shop somewhere like this?) he’s finding the characters very engaging.

Cutter’s “typically British cockiness” and Chloe’s “Australian loveliness” are singled out for a special mention, as are the way characters’ relationships develop throughout the game.  He rates it “up there with Among Thieves” so far and “given that I’m yet to stumble across that boat level, I have a feeling that things can only get a whole lot better”.

[drop2]Aran’s Mass Effect 3 multi-played Turian soldier has been getting plenty of exercise as he raised his galactic readiness all the way up.  Playing a soldier hasn’t worked in Aran’s Insanity play through though, as he’s now been stuck unable to progress on one particular mission and is considering a restart with a different class.

For the first time in a few weeks I can report that Chris has actually been playing games.  Well, a game at least:

This week I’ve been playing Reprisal Universe, it’s a god game created in homage to Populous. Obviously you’ve got to manipulate the land to enable your people to flourish, but three other warring tribes stand in your way of global domination.

As a free Flash game I wasn’t expecting much, but surprisingly (for me anyway) it’s excellent, featuring lovely pixel art and great chip tunes. It’s kept me gripped to about halfway through the game where sadly my tribe keeps getting wiped out.

Sorcery picqued my own interest with that reveal but the waits really not been worth it.  After a few hours play, aside from shinier graphics, it’s not doing anything Wii games haven’t been doing for years.  Fun, but not the PlayStation Move killer app we hoped.

Treasures of Montezuma Blitz continues to get regular play on my PS Vita whenever I find myself waiting for something for a few minutes.  I’ve had the PS Vita’s Everybody’s Golf since launch but never really got into it.  That’s changed this week though and it’s hard to put my finger on why but I’m loving it, either playing a few holes at a time or, during the weekend’s Monaco Procession Grand Prix, a couple of 18-hole rounds in quick succession.

And you’ve played?

  1. I’ve been playing a lot of Dynasty Warriors next and Gears of War 3. Just playing private multiplayer matches on Gears because I felt the urge to kill some grubs. Chainsawing guys to pieces is still fun :)

    • Forgot to mention in the post that I’ve played a couple of evenings of Gears of War 3’s Horde and Beast modes this week. There is something extremely satisfying about the visceral nature of running a chainsaw through a virtual opponent.

  2. Mortal kombat vita, I’m really into, I don’t really like fighting games & shao Kahn kinda put me off the ps3 version but on the vita I have it a try & discovered how to beat him, I’m loving the game on the vita, the tower both of them are a nightmare. Also bought a 32gb memory card am that lazy to change games am just going do download only from now on.

Need sort my Internet out now am back in the uk, my ps3 needs some play time, got dead space 2, starhawk & prototype 2 do that should keep me busy in the coming week.

  3. Played some Diablo 3 until the Battle Net outage the day before yesterday and a little of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD.

    • Oh, I gave the Gravity Rush demo a spin and it’s still a definite purchase for me.

  4. Not much this week – Platinumed Back to the Future, and played some DiRT 3. Came second in a FIFA12 league tournament with my mates – damn Barca, the team full of “cheat” players. Not yet opened Sniper Elite V2. WipEout Meet and some more DiRT 3 tonight!

Shown my Vita some love. Finally purchased Everybody’s Golf which I really like, might go and grab Resistance shortly, and I think I liked the Gravity Rush demo….I’m not sure as I doesn’t really show you much, but seeing as there isn’t much else going on for Vita I’ll probably pick it up as I liked what I played.

  5. Played a little more Max Payne 3 over the weekend, finishing the campaign and playing a few more rounds online. Great game but I can’t imagine myself holding onto it for much longer. Campaign was awesome but I doubt I will play through it a second time, while the online suffers from a lot of balancing issues.

Elsewhere I unlocked a few more achievements on HexicHD and played through ‘Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands’ in 3 short sittings. I also picked up a cheap copy of Modern Warfare 3 from Asda yesterday for £20 so played a few rounds of the survival mode with the Mrs last night.

    14 days till Lollipop :D

  6. Completed UC3 on Saturday. The game is good but the story is not as good as UC2’s was. Played a bit of Rimlag. Got SR3 yesterday and currently playing that. I am disappointed that there seems to be short as i completed Act 1 within 2 hours. I wasn’t even rushing it. Oh and the activies that are disguised as missions can get lost as i want to be able to choose if i want to do it not the game. It is starting to feel like a 6-7 out of 10 game.

    • Give it time, the first act is mainly there to bring you into the game, including the activities. I ended up really enjoying it once the game settled and left me to make the decisions :)

      • But it should have been done after the prologue and not be used to pad out the story as taking down the Morningstar wasn’t that good. In fact, the climax is very disappointing.

      • To each their own I guess :) Have you tried it co-op? That’s where the real enjoyment is

      • Not yet but may try it later today. :) Also will be too tempted to crash a STAG jet into a TSAer. :D

  7. Nothing as I’m working. Meh.

  8. Another few rounds of ‘GCSE 2K12’ for me; physics and rs this week. Other than my metaphors, I played the Gravity rush demo and a bit of Modnation on my Vita. Also, I’m finally close to finishing inFamous 2 and now all there is to do is wait for E3, which happily coincides with half term!

  9. In between revising I have played a bit of F1 2011 both on the PS3 and Vita now. Of course the daily play of TOM Blitz :) I’ve also just purchased Journey, Datura and Table top tanks from the store. Finding the first two a little boring but going to give them another go today.

  10. The start of the week was almost exclusively Dirt Showdown and the last few days Sorcery, I’m half way through my 2nd play through and should hopefully platinum it later today.
I’ve also been playing a bit more of TOM Blitz on vita thanks to the new patch and mucking about with the LBP Vita Beta.
