What We Played #56

Many of us have been busy this week with a little thing called E3. It works both to consume vast amounts of free time and also as a kind of video game aversion therapy. After a day, or more likely, night of E3, video games aren’t exactly the first port of call to help wind down.

Still we are all here at thesixthaxis because we’re perhaps a little too fond of gaming so they still get played, just a bit less than usual. My only gaming this week has been pre-arranged meet-ups with friends to play Star Wars: The Old Republic and Gran Turismo 5.

Kris has been playing Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars: Director’s Cut on iOS. He calls it “a great port of the old adventure game”. It’s so good it’s not just awesome, “it’s super awesome and funny and really addictive”. The gushing didn’t stop there, he’s “absolutely loving it”. I think he likes it, don’t you.

Snaffling the game for review for himself before the rest of us knew what was happening Peter should be enjoying playing Game of Thrones being a fan of Westeros. “Still early days with it but so far it’s absolutely dreadful”. Oh dear.

“The game is overly complex mechanically, spends too much time trying to explain those fiddly mechanics and has the worst voice acting I’ve ever heard.” Sounds like the relatively small and unknown developer may have been caught out by the franchise’s sudden HBO-elevated popularity and profile.

[drop2]“It’s a crushing disappointment for me because I really thought it could have been good.” Persevering the the game is a necessity as it’s for a review but at least Peter’s trying to remain optimistic, “I suppose it might all improve once I’ve gone past these first few hours but I’m not holding my breath.”

Jim has finally got around to spending some quality time with the copy of wipEout 2048 he picked up at launch. Despite not being a long-standing fan of the series he has “come to enjoy the game very much”. Aside from that it’s been more Wrath of Heroes as he works towards his first Mastery Tier (or Prestige in CoD parlance).

Aran’s gaming time has been filled with “a lot of Football Manager” though it can’t be much fun as he’s managing Everton. Other than that his gaming time has been occupied by The Darkness and Darksiders.

When not E3ing Blair has been playing through the Batman Arkham City: Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC for review. In a nutshell he describes it as “very underwhelming” and says that it “didn’t live up to [his] expectations or the rest of the game”.

Everyone’s favourite big cuddly bear not called Reggie, Tuffcub, is currently living it up across The Pond in New York, meaning his gaming has been PS Vita-based. Treasures of Montezuma Blitz rewarded him connecting to the server via the US PSN with a welcome back message saying as he hadn’t played the game for 619 days he could have 1.5m crystals and 619 lives.

As TC says, “that’s some bug” as he couldn’t have been playing the game the best part of two years ago. The only other game to get a look in was Resistance Burning Skies. He agrees with TSA’s 6/10 review and says the game is still good enough to be “worth a punt”.

I guess you’ve managed more gaming than we have this week?

  1. I’ve started to get back into FIFA 12, still the most infuriatingly addictive online game. Also started syndicate which I have from lovefilm, I like the premise but the gameplay is extremely samey. Seems ok, some clever mechanics but nothing special.

  2. Finally started the campaign of Resistance 3, although I also had to download all those lovely PSplus bonuses yesterday, and am thoroughly enjoying Warhammer. Haven’t really touched my Vita this week besides completing Golden Abyss…oh well!

  3. Assassins Creed 2 at the moment. The cities are very atmospheric, if you know something about the history of these places you’ll know that AC usually stays quite close to reality. I’d like to see ne set similar time to RDR, but in New York. The third game might be in america but different time. Big fan of the film ‘Gangs of New York’ Love to see an AC set during these times.

  4. Unfortunately for me, I’ve had such a busy schedule that I’ve not played a single game for about 12 days. Shameful I know. However as I now have a day off, it’s time to boot up BF3 again.

  5. I’ve been playing F1 2011 on the Vita still which is great. Completed Journey, which was great but not as good as I had hoped. Still yet to complete Datura. Other than that just played TOM Blitz and from yesterday some of the Plus games.

    • I know what you mean about Journey. The only reason I had a great experience with it is because I met someone half way through the game (who wasn’t messing about), and we just completed the second half together. It if wasn’t for that togetherness, I would have found the whole game fairly boring to be honest.

      • Luckily I also did have the same person for the latter half of the game, so making up the mountain in the snow with another person was great, and quite tense. Other people I played with were rubbish and couldnt sort out the puzzles and were lagging behind leaving me a bit frustrated.

      • I know what you mean. The game was great visually too.

      • Yeah :) Soundtrack is fantastic too.

  6. Vita: WipEout Meet last Friday (always fun), a couple of rounds of Everybody’s Golf and a fair bit of Resistance Burning Skies. Despite the reviews I’m actually really enjoying it!

PS3: lots of DiRT 3, should have the Platinum in a 2-3 weeks as I’m spreading out the multiplayer grind. Absolutely loving Cat n Mouse – one of the best multiplayer game modes I’ve played in any online game. McProley and I won 6 out of 7 rounds online the other night and it was such a laugh; and we joined Forrest for a Joyride! A few games of Awesomenauts hear and there, and another level 5-star’d on Dead Space: Extraction.

Going to start Sniper Elite V2 tonight, and will finally try the Hitman Sniper Challenge since I’ll be in the sniping mood.

    • “and we joined Forrest for a Joyride”

      Hehe.

Also looking forward to getting my hands on Sniper Elite V2 :)

      • A play on words ;)

Same, a new IP for me (haven’t played the first game) which is always nice too.

  7. Just the usual Gran Turismo new academy events, seasonals events and a TSA meet up. A Burnout Paradise meet Wednesday evening, and more recently Oddworld Strangers Wrath HD downloaded yesterday courtesy of PS+, and I’m enjoying so far.
    Not a lot really!

  8. Started new playthrough on Saints Row The Third. Discovered that there are more then 3 clothing shops. I’m playing as a female. Using the first voice for females. Discovered that it’s possible to reset the stats by deleting the profile. I plan to do all of the gang operations as well as the side activities and buy every shop before i continue the story. Only died once due to fire.

Also, resumed rimming on my PS3. I’m a Breton Battlemage and currently at level 13. Did Molag’s quest as well as the Forsworn conspiracy questline. Also did some bounties and some fetch quests. I plan to do the main quest when i’m either in Whiterun naturally, or i’m level 20. Only Dragon Rising then shall join the companions. Currently using superior steel Armour which has the shoulder pads(can’t spell the proper name for it atm) as it looks better and imo, looks like it offers more protection then the other version of the steel armour. Before i created that for myself, i was using bounded armour with fine iron boots and steel bracers. Then steel boots. I’m trying to avoid using armours that covers up the hands completely as i like to think that a battlemage would avoid crippling his abitily to cast and that bracers don’t affect him in any way.

Also paniced on Thursday as i bumped into a Hargraven in a forsworn location which was involved for Hajti’s sword quest. I was level 8 and Hargravens are not to be taken lightly. Luckily, i managed to dodge the ice spikes and i killed her. Have cleared out several forswon locations. Trying to avoid nord ruins to avoid getting a shout that i can’t unlock as i want to unlock them at my own pace when the Dragons start spawning after the third mainquest. Although, for me, i just need to pay Jarl Baargruuff a visit then i’m off to fight a dragon. I’ve not done a lot of quests that are not misc. In fact, i’ve probably only done 5 side quests that have their own entry into the journal.

Also started Peyrite’s quest. For some reason, the Thalmor are after me despite me doing eff all to them. O-o Normally, they only send people after you if you have activiely attacked them or completed Diplomatic immunity.

I discovered an Orc Stronghold in Markreath hold. And have got the apprentice level destruction spells as well as the Fast healing spell. I think i shall go on a cusade and wipe the Forsworn from Skyrim.(clearing out every Forsworn location). Probably 10-15 hours in.

Oops, i didn’t realise i would end up doing a wall of text that is probably half the size of the article. :O

    • Its all about the zombie voice on saints row,had me in stitches, not that I could understand what was going on half the time lol

    • Holy F****ing shit man, that’s a community round up youv’e done right there. Getting in some practice are we :P

  9. Still trying to get into mass effect 3,I still cant make up my mind! Finished of BTTF which I enjoyed the story but I got a bit bored towards the end.
Vita wise got my platinum on Resistance Burning Skies, too easy, I like a little bit of a challenge ! Then its been TOM Blitz and getting irritated trying to finish the multiplayer on wipeout 2048! So long winded!
Oh yeah downloaded a couple of plus games, but have yet to play.

    • Agreed on BttF, got boring towards the end. I don’t see why games like that don’t have mini-games as puzzles to break up the point-and-click monotony.

I feel your pain with WipEout 2048, man that dragged. I was 32nd fastest Plat earner on psnprofiles before those leaderboards dissappeared, was quite proud of that. There are 210 events (I think) and you have to at least win 80, which is quite demanding for a multiplayer section.

    • Hav you played the other ME games if so what’s stopping you from playing ME3, it’s better than ME2 dunno about ME1 as I have a ps3

  10. Been playing nothing but monster hunter on my vita so many hours put into that game, only wish a patch with trophies would come cause I feel like all the work needs a reward lol

Hardly touched my ps3 might sell it (just joking) I’m just trying sort my house out then should be back online got a few games & feels like am not taking advantage of my plus
