Surprise! Metal Gear Solid 5 Mentioned, Not Finished With Solid Snake

Hideo Kojima is a massive fan of pulling the ol’ bait and switch. He appears to mean one thing and then leaps from the darkness and slaps you with something totally unexpected. Like a finger-blistering endurance crawl through about four hours of microwave ovens just when you were expecting an exciting end to your videogame.

Well, his latest venture into duplicitous hijinks surrounds everyone’s favourite bandana-wearing war criminal, Solid Snake. Remember the end of Metal Gear Solid 4? Well, how about Metal Gear Solid 5 getting a mention and Solid’s name cropping up? Confusing, huh?

Here’s the Google translate transcription from an interview the eccentric genius has given to a French magazine:

There will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 with the new FOX Engine but what we’ve shown was not gameplay, or anything like that. It was only a demo that we had developed internally and released because the lighting and interactions with the environment had fooled everyone.

About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things. There will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you “a favor” like in the last Metal Gear Solid. I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, I will be carved up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5.

Kojima goes on to defend the direction taken in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance by saying that it was never intended to be a “Solid” game, simply a spin off. Most tantalisingly, though, he touches on Solid’s future by saying “We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots”

Of course, with nothing more concrete out in the open, we can’t be sure there won’t be some vague flashback sequence or time rift that sucks Solid into the future or something. Let’s be honest, with Kojima involved anything could happen and it would probably be brilliant. This might even be a slight mistranslation but it seems to be fairly definite language in use, perhaps even a hint of sadness that Kojima wasn’t allowed to kill off Solid Snake as he wanted to.

  1. Now is this milking it? I mean it is the biggest seller of Konami…I think it’ll be a Solid Snake prequel. Anywhere in the timeline. Hoping for Zanzibar type scene but who knows. Can’t be in the future can it?
Btw i liked the microwave ovens!

  2. I don’t think its milking it at all, not when you put it side by side with the likes of Call Of Duty and Fifa.

  3. I really hope we won’t be getting another Snake game as he’s dead as far as i’m concerned. However if they do a game that takes place between 2&4, i can see there being room for Snake as we have very little to go on of what he was up to during those years.

  4. This is music to my ears.
