Hideo Kojima is a massive fan of pulling the ol’ bait and switch. He appears to mean one thing and then leaps from the darkness and slaps you with something totally unexpected. Like a finger-blistering endurance crawl through about four hours of microwave ovens just when you were expecting an exciting end to your videogame.
Well, his latest venture into duplicitous hijinks surrounds everyone’s favourite bandana-wearing war criminal, Solid Snake. Remember the end of Metal Gear Solid 4? Well, how about Metal Gear Solid 5 getting a mention and Solid’s name cropping up? Confusing, huh?
Here’s the Google translate transcription from an interview the eccentric genius has given to a French magazine:
There will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 with the new FOX Engine but what we’ve shown was not gameplay, or anything like that. It was only a demo that we had developed internally and released because the lighting and interactions with the environment had fooled everyone.
About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things. There will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you “a favor” like in the last Metal Gear Solid. I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, I will be carved up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5.
Kojima goes on to defend the direction taken in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance by saying that it was never intended to be a “Solid” game, simply a spin off. Most tantalisingly, though, he touches on Solid’s future by saying “We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots”
Of course, with nothing more concrete out in the open, we can’t be sure there won’t be some vague flashback sequence or time rift that sucks Solid into the future or something. Let’s be honest, with Kojima involved anything could happen and it would probably be brilliant. This might even be a slight mistranslation but it seems to be fairly definite language in use, perhaps even a hint of sadness that Kojima wasn’t allowed to kill off Solid Snake as he wanted to.

Snake will also be in MGS 6 – You heard it here first, folks!

Should have left it at 4. A conclusion just would’ve been nice for once…no one seems to be able to let things go, a la Halo 4.

I thought they were going to do the boss and the whole mission in WW2 thing. dam it i was looking forward to that, they cant possibly do one that goes even more into the future, hes already old enough dam it, unless they have cured him or its back in time.

Woooow! I think I’m going to need locking away, in some way I feel predisposed to rave about MGS…. Must…. show…. restraint. I can’t wait to hear more from Mr Kojima, until then I’ll get back in my box.

OK- MGS1 was great, 2 was good, 3 was average and 4 was self-indulgent crap. Does this mean 6 will actually be the worst game ever?
rSp8
Sorry, meant 5 will be the worst game ever. Christ knows what twadle they’ll come up with for 6!

what do you mean 3 was only good! it was probably the best one by a long shot.
2s plot made less sense than anything ever imagined before and one has not aged well.
ron_mcphatty
None of it makes any sense until you’ve played them all three times, surely thats the beautfy of it?

MGS1, 2 and 3 were all brilliant games with brilliant stories IMO. Yes MGS2 was more complex but it was just as gripping. Snake Eater was my favourite though. MGS4 was self indulgent, your right there. It wasn’t ‘crap’ though I don’t think. Maybe different to previous games but it needed to change for next gen really to make the most of better graphics. Its all just opinions.

Please give me Zanzibar Land, sacred part of the series. Lets face it, although the SNES games etc were good, in full hd ps3 this would be brilliant.

it’s not that weird for him to write a prequel, like Metal Gear Solid 3, in which Solid Snake is still alive, right?
Foxhound_Solid
Imo this is the reason revengence had a change in direction storywise… MGS5 will be immediately after MGS2… Sunny, Ninja Raiden, The Patriots, Philanthropy…. let’s go!!!!!

I am very excited. Seriously, I love MGS, I want another MGS game. I don’t mind if Solid Snake is in it or not, I just want another game.
