PSN Store Update: 05/09/12

It’s been a few rough weeks for the poor sods who have to face the public over on the PS Blog. Repeated delays to PSN Store content in Europe have been met with reactions ranging from resigned apathy to vitriolic verbal attacks to ridiculous cry-baby whining.

Where the emotion comes from is quite understandable, of course: there’s been a number of things that appear to have gone quite wrong, from a consumer’s perspective. It’s certainly not the fault of the guys responding to comments on the blog but then, who else do disgruntled consumers have to complain to?

Anyway, now we’ve mentioned that nastiness, we can sit ourselves defiantly on the cloud and admire the silver lining.

PlayStation Plus is updating today and, in celebration, there’s a 25 per cent discount on the yearly subscription. This takes an already amazing value package and makes it cheaper. I like to imagine that some mischievous soul replaced the bottled water with vodka at the PlayStation Plus policy meeting and, by the end of it, we were all their “besht mates” and they wanted to buy us another round. Seriously, it’s £29.99 for a year of free games, discounts and early beta access. Get it.

Elsewhere on the Store, there’s the new freebie for Vita that makes going places fun: Treasure Park. We’re also getting PS3 and Vita versions of Zen Pinball 2, along with its PopCap-sanctioned Plants Vs Zombies table (where’s my Peggle table, guys?). There’s also the arrival of the Metal Gear Solid HD games as individual purchases for £11.99 each.

  1. un fucking believable

  2. Is Zen Pinball 2, really free? awesome! I’m really glad I can just use tables from previous games.

    • Oh read wrong. Trial, is it still Cross buy however? if not meh.

  3. no Machinarium?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxlhyX-4qKI

i’m gonna try not to overuse it, but this is scee here.

and how the hell did they only discover it was gonna be delayed, on the day of the frakking store update?

they have to be taking the piss now, they’re just seeing how far they can push people before they push them away completely.

they’ve already got two pretty high profile titles still MIA and now this.

  4. Surprised nobody’s mentioned the ES Sports Season Ticket yet. I was annoyed last year when it didn’t come out in Europe on PS3 because I buy a fair amount of packs on FIFA UT so was missing out on the 20% DLC discount.

I bought a 360 (again) a couple of months back after playing Kinect at a friend’s house and deciding it was way better than Move, so I bought the season ticket on there at the weekend and it’s actually really good value for money. Here’s why:-

    – You get 24 gold packs for EACH of Madden, NHL and FIFA 13
    – The cost to buy these as DLC for one of the games costs around the same as the season ticket (slightly less than it on 360 and slightly more on PS3)
    – You get 20% off all paid DLC for each of these games, plus Tiger Woods 13
    – You get exclusive web content to things like FIFA Creation Centre
    – You get early access to download a full version of each game for a few days before it comes out (it says in the app and on the EA Sports website that it’s three days, however FIFA for example will be available on Monday 24th when the game comes out on Friday 28th – not sure whether the PS3 will get an update before the usual Wednesday one on the 26th)
    – This early access doesn’t depend on anything other than you having purchased the Season Ticket, so you don’t have to buy the full game at all if you decide from the early access that you don’t like it, or if you do buy it, you can choose where you get it – so console download or a retail disc version are both fine

So you get all this for around the price of 24 gold packs in FIFA UT which I would get anyway if I’d not got the Season Ticket, plus I’ll save 20% on any additional packs that I buy. Unless Tesco do their usual and sell the game for £25 on release day then I’ll get the Ultimate Edition too which will give me another 24 gold packs.

Some people will complain about it for the same reasons as season passes for other games, but this does give much better value for money in my opinion, and that’s just if you buy one game if you’re planning on getting at least two of FIFA, Madden and NHL and will use Ultimate Team in each, then you’re effectively getting back £20 per game in packs, plus saving 20% on any additional ones you buy – plus if something like the Euro 2012 expansion comes out again then you’ll also save 20% on that too.

Bit of a long post, but hopefully it clarifies the functionality of the Season Ticket to people who weren’t sure what it did, as I didn’t know until the weekend that it gives you the UT packs. And before anyone asks: no, I don’t work for EA Sports or any company affiliated with them! ;o)

    • Oops, “EA Sports Season Ticket”, not “ES Sports”

  5. I might stack up a subscription to last me until 2014. I reckon that even if the PS4 launches by 2013, the cross saves et al will carry over.

  6. It seems that SCEE don’t fire idiotic useless people, they promote them.
That must be what they’re doing, no other excuse for these continuous mistakes.
