God Of War: Ascension’s Controversial “Bros Before Hos” Trophy To Be Patched Out

God of War: Ascension is a good game – scoring 8/10 in our review – but it’s not quite as good as God of War III. However, one thing it does do “well” is cause a little bit of controversy.

Mild spoilers below.

The latest thing? One of the game’s trophies – “Bros before Hos” – caused quite a stir when Revision 3’s Adam Sessler made a issue of it in his review. Linking the trophy (not entirely accurately) to stomping the head of a certain female antagonist, it has been the subject of much debate online on messageboards for the last few days.

And Sony are changing it.

A new patch, due soon, will change the trophy name to “Bros Before Foes” – it loses a little of the meaning but apparently this will satisfy those upset. “We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies,” says the statement.

“The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game,” Sony Santa Monica’s statement noted. “We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”

The trophy isn’t – despite what some have said – triggered directly after the “stomping”, rather related to something another male character does (that’s non violent).

  1. ‘offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the ‘….. they’re prats!

  2. I bet those members of the community were women, this is why they not embraced in the gaming community, they get all sensitive & stuff.

I mean the trophy ain’t even related to doing something to a woman or aggressive so what’s the problem smh

    • What? Are you serious? :(

      • Lol no they are welcomed in the community but they should take a joke or 2. Look at tomb raider they got all touchy about it, then look at the whale protestors they got a fishy about assassin creed.

At the end of the day this trophy wasn’t offensive

    • It won’t be women that are offended it will be those self righteous bellend guys that suffer from white knight syndrome.

  3. People are stupid. Nearly all of them. Dumb fucks.
    1. How can anyone possibly find that offensive?
    2. How can it possibly impact anyone’s enjoent?
Dumb shits. The lot of em.

  4. I don’t find that trophy offensive.

But then I’m not a feminist woman.

On the other hand, “Bros before hos?” Really?
How old are we? Seems fairly childish to me.

Anytime I forget why gaming is derided by many as a childish thing for those who aren’t quite mature yet, it reminds me.

  5. I find it offensive.
80s boybands need not be brought into videogaming.

  6. i think in this instance, a few people have made something of a mountain out of a molehill here.

if the problem is the violence against a woman, well, there’s been violence that was much more gruesome against men throughout most of the series, so it’s not like the games are promoting violence against women.
take the bit where Kratos rips that guys head off.

if it’s the name, well, that’s just being over sensitive.

if people want to tackle sexism in this industry, and i think it does need tackling, go after the things that really matter.

like why so few fps game developers think women can be soldiers.
why are women, nearly, always the ones being rescued rather than doing the rescuing.
the way any attractive female developer gets comments mostly about how they look rather than what they’re making, Jade Raymond being a good example.
producer of the first couple of games in one of the biggest, non COD, game series, but most of the comments made whenever she made a public appearance to promote her game were about how attractive she was or what they’d like to do to her.
though that is more a community rather than industry issue.

  7. If they are offended by this then how the hell do they see past the sex scenes and serious violence within the game. Twats.

    • Excatly. They must have had a heart attack when they saw Kratos rip an enemy in half and vowing to kill the gods in the other games as well as using his blade of olympus on some women. ;)

    • Agreed. No context whatsoever. Also, if I write to Sony and say “the game is a little violent” would they also reply with “the violence was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game,” then remove it?

Seriously, it’s a bloody game, guys. It’s entertainment! It’s a trophy for said entertainment. How effing sensitive?

  8. For pete’s sake! It’s a light hearted name for a trophy and is not offensive. Plus, the game is rated 18, so anything goes. What’s next? forcing Kratos to wear armour instead of fighting in his loincloth? Removing gore? turning Kratos into a very pleasant man and not the very definition of rage and venegance. In fact, i’m surprised GOW has not been complained about for including violence against women as Kratos does tend to kill some in the games. If they think this is offensive, i feel sorry for Rockstar as they have probably got a lot of names for trophies that refer to hookers, sex, drugs and the usual stuff that GTA is known for.

    • you leave pete’s sake alone!

      • Fine! For spike’s sake!

  9. If Kratos was getting beat the crap out of by three women, persistently, thus prompting a “change difficulty” option, which also popped a trophy titled “they really can’t multitask” – it would be fine. Men would chuckle, real men wouldn’t change the difficulty anyway.
But mention anything slighty sexist towards females and suddenly alterations need to be made to prevent a handful of people complaining.

People are far too soft, cowards stand down and let the few walk over many. My missus and I throw sexist remarks at each other all the time. It only becomes a problem when two braincells need to rub together to determine if there is malicious intent or just a witty remark. If you can’t determine that – just shut the f*ck up until you can.

  10. Is the phrase comon parlance? Yes, it was used in Transformers 1.

    Is it offensive: Maybe.

Are people overreacting: Erm, yes. There are plenty of instances of Kratos slaughtering women before.

Was it a mistake by Sony to use the phrase: Yes. But I bet they are enjoying all the extra headlines.
