For the past few weeks we’ve been convinced that the next Assassin’s Creed would be set in Russia, first with the emergence of a rather great looking logo to lots of Russian links tweeted by the AC Initiates Twitter. While it’s still a possibility that theory appears to have taken a bit of a knock as it appears someone has passed on some images to Kotaku, and these appear to show an assassin running around a historical Paris.
According to the unnamed messenger the French setting of the yet unannounced entry to the franchise is exclusively for the Xbox One and the PS4, codenamed Unity, while another one is in development for last generation consoles, apparently named Comet. Apparently Unity will be set during the French Revolution and will be led by the protagonist Arno. There are some early screenshots below that include commands like ‘parkour down’ and ‘parkour up’.
These screens do look quite legitimate though of an early build of an Assassin’s Creed title. There’s no indication to say these are official and apparently Ubisoft has already declined to comment.

Fake… Waaaaaaay fake.

Looks a lot like the Mont Saint Michel multiplayer map from AC Brotherhood.

I really wish they would just put the series to bed, havnt enjoyed any of them since Assassins creed 2, not even Assassins creed 4. Their time could be so much better used on a new IP, shame devs/pubs don’t like stepping out of a comfort zone any more.

Looks like the character is female in the last couple of shots.
JR.
Was thinking the same myself.

I don’t think so. That’s how they dressed back then. I’d say the protag is definitely male.

Yesssss!! Happy with Paris or Russia. In fact there are loads of settings I’d love to see! :-)

Really excited by this, been looking forward to a revolutionary/Napoleonic France setting since the series started! The screens look pretty legit to me, though obviously it would still be a early build. I don’t think it’s a female assassin though, with the feminine appearance of the protagonist in the last few shots being solely due to the rather tight fitting clothing of the period. Plus Arno is a masculine name.
I’ve always loved the AC series, so for me the more games the better! If you don’t like it, don’t buy it!

Completely agree.
I love AC, as do millions of others as evident by it’s ridiculously high sales year on year. For people to want a franchise to die – which millions enjoy – is stupid in my opinion. If you don’t like it, don’t play it. Simple.

You know, I’ve just had a light bulb moment for the setting of the other game on the PS3/360. I think all these rumours of a Russian setting are true, because the codename of this game ‘Comet’ could be referring to the alleged ‘comet’ impact that caused the Tunguska event in Russia in 1908 (and within a realistic timeframe that may include the Revolution), which has already been referred to in the AC lore as an experiment on one of the Staves of Eden that was sabotaged by Nikola Tesla.

Maybe Tesla could play the role of a character similar to Da Vinci in ACII?
Looking back at all the games, it has struck me just how superior ACII is to all the other entries. Good character development, good story, a good layer of conspiracy/templar stuff, a good layer of the ‘those who came before stuff’ and it was just the right amount so that it was left mysterious and intriguing, good gameplay mechanics with some great new introductions, more stealth based gameplay, great characters like Da Vinci who actually played an important role in the game as well as being a cool and notable historical figure, a beautiful and rarely used setting in a game. I could go on and on. ACII for me was pretty close to perfect, and I hope a future AC game can hit the sweet spot that ACII did so well for me.

AC2 was that for me, a brilliant game, and maybe thats why i think they should quit with the series, they peaked at the second entry in the series, been downhill since there.
Doesnt ever feel like ive been playing an assassin, after the first 2 really (revelations, Brotherhood didnt really bother with so dont know about them) But in 3, i was playing some british guy, who was not an assassin, I heard you start playing as some black guy, shows how interesting that was. AC4… Pirates Creed now? Jesus.

This series pissed me off and lost me when they tried to shoehorn America in again, like so many other series (Resistance for example).
There is a world outside of that bloody country, especially when dealing with historical stories … London for example was around before America was even settled by Europeans. But no, let’s go back to fucking America. Christ!
Starman
For me the series ended with Ezio’s story. Found AC3 boring, didn’t bother with 4.

IV is easily the best in the series for me, even above Brotherhood.
TSBonyman
Try as i might, i just can’t get into AC IV either, i think i’m just tired of the series. Mind you, i would be interested in a Russian back-story so we’ll see.
Starman
I disliked the ship sections in 3 so didn’t get 4. Time for a reboot I think. Fuedal Japan, tenchu style would interest me.

It was going to be set in Russia, but removing the russian setting from the game is the best sanctions the EU could come up with for invading the ukraine. Keep it up Russia, and the next Metro game is moving to France too.
