Yesterday Sony put up a teaser site for something called H1Z1, and I theorised it was a play on the virus H1N1 with the z standing for zombies. Well looks like I was spot on as H1Z1 is a survival MMO which will be free to play, and it will require players to survive in a world full of the Infected (aka zombies) while looking for supplies and shelter. The Infected are so called because a virus spread and turned them into the monsters that roam this fictional United States. This seems like Sony’s attempt to compete against DayZ.
SOE’s John Smedley took to Reddit to explain what players will face in H1Z1, stating it the world will originate in what is being dubbed as Middle America, but the hope is to grow the map until it represents the USA and make it connect seamlessly. This will include everything from small towns, to various cities and open spaces. It’ll be open for players to do as they wish from building basic shelters to working together and building fortresses to live in and survive against the zombies, all constructed from the environment like trees. There will trading, vehicles that can be fixed up and ridden in by groups of players and servers will hold thousands of concurrent players.
You’ll be able to play as you wish from being a farmer, trader, craftsman, soldier or any other occupation you can think of that could be useful in the zombie apocalypse. Player Studio creations will also be put into the game so if you have an idea you can create it and see if turns up for people to buy. It sounds fun enough and since it’s free to play I may give it a go when H1Z1 eventually releases.

Since watching The Walking Dead I’ve always wanted a game exactly like this for my console. Please make it for PS4 !!!

Yeah, if it’s something like the Walking Dead, I’m definitely excited for this. It sounds very interesting, with the different roles, but I just want to know if it will be PvP or PvE – if it’s PvP, count me out, games like Day-Z and Rust appear so unbalanced it puts me right off.

Seriously, though, I thought it would be only a matter of time until decent sized studios thought that a more professionally developed version of DayZ could be a very lucrative title.
It’s the very reason why Undead Inc. is allegedly working on an MMO version of State of Decay.
