Community Chronicle: 01/06/14

It’s just a little over a week before E3 kicks off in Los Angeles, and it’s already shaping up to be quite a fascinating, if not overly surprising show. It feels like everyone has been falling over themselves to announce their games ahead of time, so I’m not too sure if there’s much left in reserve. Just take the first of this week’s Hot Topics as an example.

It may have started as a leak, but EA were quick to confirm Battlefield Hardline was a real title and coming out late this year. With Visceral Games working on single player and DICE taking multiplayer duties, as the franchise spreads its wings to a cops & robbers dynamic, it’s an interesting shift for EA.

Bunimomike was rather optimistic for the concept, saying, “As a player of Payday: The Heist and Payday 2 it was immediately apparent that the core concept of the game was incredibly sound and refreshing. With that in mind, I mentioned to friends that a big publisher will one day do their own version of it. It makes perfect business sense and I think Hardline could well be it.”

However, there’s certainly a feeling that Battlefield 4 may have tainted the waters, with nightdc stating that he “won’t touch it with a barge poll after the last mess”, and cc_star cataloguing the series’ history with bugs, noting that “BF3 had constant problems, BF4 can be a total mess… even back to BF 1943, which had fatally broken voice comms on PS3 (360 was fine) and remained unpatched – Wouldn’t give a DICE a penny for a game.”

Pre-E3 announcements weren’t the only things to get leaked this week, as parts of next month’s PlayStation Plus update slipped out slightly ahead of time too. With Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate, NBA 2K14 and Lone Survivor breaking cover first, the early response was not particularly positive.

Scavenga said, “I always defend Sony’s Plus offers, even when I already own everything in a month’s update, but staying positive is getting really difficult. These lo-res pixel games like Lone Survivor are actually starting to aggravate me.”

However, once the shift to six games per month (losing the yearly titles) and Trine 2: The Complete Story, Dragon’s Crown and Surge Deluxe we revealed, the tone shifted quite noticeably. Colmshan1990 went through the list before summing it up as a good selection “if you’re willing to try and explore it, while MrYd warned people off Surge Deluxe with the ominous claim that “It’s far too addictive.”

Finally, the terribly disappointing news that Future would be shutting down the websites for Official PlayStation, Official Xbox and Official Nintendo magazines as well as CVG and Edge Online, taking 170 jobs along with them.

DrDamn thought some of this made sense, opining that “They really don’t need all the websites. Single website which concentrates on news and cream of articles/reviews from mags. One for each publication was craziness.”

There was also a response to the near indicipherable jargon used to justify the moves, with Starman admitting that “I’d respect them a bit more if they just said, “It’s not making enough money so we’re shutting it down.'”
Either way, I’m sure we can all agree to wish those now out of a job luck in finding new employment.

It’s been a while since I talked about my own achievements on here, but last night, I finished off the delightfully whacky Saints Row IV, having played the entire game co-operatively with Bunimomike, and earlier this week I finished Transistor for the second time, grabbing the platinum trophy in the process, the fastest record too, but I’d be willing to give that up under certain conditions.

Elsewhere, it’s been rather quiet on the trophies front, with Pixel_nme nabbing The Walking Dead’s platinum on PS Vita, in amidst sessions with Wolfenstein: The New Order, Watch Dogs and Child of Light.

Crazy_Del earnt the Wolfenstein platinum, but not for the most recent one, the 2009 release. Surprisingly, he’s also grabbed the record for this, and he’s on the cusp of doing the same for Watch Dogs, which he’s just finished this morning. What a nutter, eh?

Lyts1985 finished off Stick it to the Man, earning all of the trophies in the process, while I believe that R1MJAW is but a single trophy away from completing the list for Trials Fusion. Unfortunately that one is to complete all of the game’s ridiculously hard challenges, and it sounds like he’s ready to move on from this one.

Another long term project has been Freezebug’s chase of the Everybody’s Golf platinum on PS Vita, which he seems to now be pretty close to, having finally managed to get all of the stars and crowns within the game. Similarly, element666 is closing in on the Ni no Kuni platinum, with just a trio of trophies left.

Aside from that, though, it’s been a rather subdued week, so here’s hoping for more trophies next time around.

We’re nearly done, but you can head over to page two for the return of the Fastest Platinum boards. To finish off this page, we have the usual submission form for photos and accomplishments.

If people want to keep sending photos in, I’ll be happy to post them, but gaming places is no longer a regular feature. If you fancy it, just use the submission form below, get in touch with me on Twitter at @teflon, or just send me an email out of the blue to [email protected]

  1. I enjoy how I am on the leader board 3 times as TaylorMade, Still_ill_Son & justtaylormade lol I should stop changing my name.

How come you willing give away the transistor plat

  2. Me, ready to move on from Trials? Not likely. It’s probably my favourite game so far on PS4. I’m pretty sure there’s a few more challenges I can do (and I did a few last night so I’m now up to 89) and hopefully the first dlc pack will be released soon which will give me more stuff to attempt.

I’m also about half way through my evil/expert run through Infamous so I should hopefully platinum that in the next day or two.

  3. Ha, yeah quite a journey chasing those Crowns in Everybody’s Golf Vita. I’m not convinced that the difficult part is yet done though in regards to getting the platinum as I still have to hit an Albatross during an official round and skim across water 3 times with a perfect fairway landing….WTF!!! also there’s a few grinders left to do.
Cracking game for the handheld nonetheless ;)
