Nintendo’s Amiibo Launch Line-Up Announced, Available To Pre-Order Now

Nintendo’s amiibo figurines will launch later this year. These essentially work as cross-game, cross-platform NFC toys which can be used to save progress through Wii U and 3DS games as well as level individual characters up. They’re available to pre-order now for £10.99 over on the Nintendo Store.

The first games to be supported are Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Mario Party 10 all eventually using the figurines.

There will be twelve characters available at first, and the line-up is now confirmed as Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby, and Marth. You can expect more characters to become available in time – it wouldn’t make sense for Nintendo to release them all at once. Hopefully Luigi is on the way!

As well as the Wii U GamePad – which currently includes NFC support – Nintendo will be launching a new 3DS next year which comes with a plethora of upgrades, including support for reading the NFC figurines. There will also be an adapter for current 3DS users.

  1. I wonder how games like Yoshi’s Wooly World and Cpt Toad will use them. Savefile transfer? Costumes for Toad?

  2. I saw them in a cabinet on the nintendo stand at hyper japan and they do look pretty good though I can’t imagine they’ll sell many wii fit trainer ones!
