Sony has dated firmware update 2.0Â for the PlayStation 4, which will bring themes, Youtube uploading and USB music playback to the system, with the release penned for October 28th which is Tuesday. The news has come via PlayStation Europe’s Twitter feed and you can see the post below.
NEWS: PS4 software update ‘Masamune’ (2.0) available Tuesday 28 October. Includes SharePlay, USB Music player + more! http://t.co/DsfntoyRZz
— PlayStation Europe (@PlayStationEU) October 23, 2014
Firmware 2.0 has been a long time coming, and you can read about the features that it will include here and here. There are requested items missing from this update, including DLNA support and folders to group things together. Hopefully we’ll see those implemented not so far in the future.
Here’s two fun facts about the word Masamune courtesy of former TSA writer Lee Cash. First, Masamune is a swordsmith who is considered to be Japan’s greatest ever in that field of expertise. Second, in an homage to the famed swordsmith Sephiroth’s sword also goes by that name in FFVII.

Finally! Inside source and I (probably) get to keep my job!
:)
Mr Blighty
My inside source tells me that firmware 2.0 has alot more than meets the eye, it lays the groundwork for some more features following along pretty quickly specifically arriving later this year in 2.1 project name “Sukenobu”
Firmware 2.0 is a major OS update that’s had a painful birth, and many of the changes in it were blocking changes on future work. Now its out, things are going to move alot quicker, in a more modular fashion.
Starman
“suk nob u” ha ha, worst firmware name ever!
Mr Blighty
Its a project name, unlikely to see the light of day, unless Sony have decided to emulate Googles public android naming schemes, but with a Japanese twist.
DirtyHabit
After Sukenobu? Who was basically famous for pornographic illustration?
DR-DAVROS
Does this also mean that the remote play for sony xperia z3 will he available same day.
Also with share play can you play co op example fifa 15 2 player ?
Have fun
rept0n
I’ve not seen anything about co-op/multiplayer and share play. Would be fantastic if this did work, but can see why publishers would want this locked out.
MrYd
I hope this is the start of a long line of updates named after “Pointy Things and the People Who Make Them”.
The next one will be named “Jeffrey”, after the famous Mr Jeffrey Fork, who invented a many-pronged eating utensil in 1857. (Before that, people used to tie several knives together with special string).
It’s true! Give me 10 minutes and check wikipedia if you don’t believe me ;)
Pixel_nme
I’ll be checking in 10 minutes!
MrYd
Ah, crap. That means I’ve got to head over to wikipedia and work out how to edit it so it says the right things. And I don’t know how!
Can’t you just pretend and say you did?
Pixel_nme
ok ok as you asked so nicely ;)
Pixel_nme
I’ve just checked this and it’s definitely true,Jeffrey Fork did indeed invent a many pronged eating utensil in 1857.
MrYd
Yay! So now you know all about Mr Jeffrey Fork.
If you’re lucky, I’ll tell you all about Mr Brian Hover sometime. You’ll never guess what he invented. Or how he died.
Pixel_nme
we’ll look forward to it,it could become a weekly feature ;D
MrYd
It was the same year Mr Jeffrey Fork invented his “Many-pronged Eating Utensil” when Mr Brian Hover, 37, accidentally created his greatest invention.
For several years, he’d travelled the country, cleaning the carpets of the rich and famous with his Steam-Powered Suction Cleaning Contraption. Who could predict the excitement that would occur on that warm Wednesday afternoon in August 1857. Due to a misunderstanding (later referred to as “The Great Misunderstanding”), the Contraption was accidentally put into reverse.
Much to his surprise, nobody died as the whole thing floated around the room on a cushion of air, and some dust. And so what he rather oddly insisted on calling the Briancraft was born.
He would have made a fortune, if he hadn’t tragically died the very next year when he was run over by a goat. His widow inherited his inventions and marketed them successfully from the comfort of her goat farm near Sheffield, where she lived with many goats and enjoyed frequent visits from “gentlemen callers”. She also invented the concept of libel, after several newspapers tried to claim the Goat Incident wasn’t a tragic accident but a cunning murder plot. (Later the basis of an unpublished Agatha Christie novel with a moderately racist title)
Tony Cawley
Mryd, you should write a book called” the unknown origins of inventions”. You make literally pounds out of it!
Pixel_nme
1857 was a good year for inventions,1858 not so good for Mr Brian Hoover ;)
MrYd
Mr Brian Hoover?? Who’s he? Did he invent anything as clever as Mr Brian Hover? I think not! And Mr Brian Hover did all that with only a single O in his name.
Mr Brian Hoover was a terrible scoundrel who tried to steal the inventions of greater inventors, such as Mr Brian Hover, by seducing their wives (he was quite successful at that, by simply promising to save time on housework and wearing suggestive trousers).
He was eventually stopped by a Mr Brian Hopper, who had the good sense to patent his idea for “A Method for One-legged Perambulation” before the insidious Mr Hoover could steal it.

Sounds to me like you’ve had a visit in 2014 from Mr Mushroom or Mr Ellis-Dee.
Tony Cawley
I’ll be looking forward to this, hopefully it’ll improve the operation of the psn too.
Mr Blighty
What problems?
bunimomike
I actually think you live on another planet sometimes. The PSN has quite a bit of downtime (and sadly, not all of it is scheduled maintenance). Also, download times have, historically, been atrocious compared to other networks like Steam, Xbox, iTunes, etc.
I can only assume you’re either delusional or Sony are up to the back of your throat! :-\
Tony Cawley
Funniest thing about blighty’s comment is, I never even mentioned problems in my wording at all!
TSBonyman
Mr Blighty must be in the running for funniest comment of the year, i can’t even glance at it now without cracking up! :)
Mr Blighty
Didn’t xbox live have a 4 day outage a couple of weeks back? Seems like I’m not the one with selective memories
DirtyHabit
You don’t half post crap.
kjkg
It’s entertaining to watch you defend SONY and slag MS constantly, with so much belief in what you say. I’m a massive SONY fanboy but even I can admit to the many PS4 shortcomings.
bunimomike
Oh, Blighty… I’m not the one with a selective memory. The PSN definitely has more trouble with their servers (and systems) than XBL. Even PlayStation gamers will tell you this in their droves and they love their PlayStations. They’re just mature enough to handle the fact that the things they love might not be perfect after all.
Sony are doing a top job with the PS4. It’s selling light hot cakes and there are some wonderful games coming over the next handful of months. That doesn’t stop them, however, making a balls-up of something else or at least letting things slide a bit. This is where the PSN comes in. During the entirety of the last generation, it played second fiddle to XBL. It was okay but could’ve been so much faster; more robust, etc. They’ve improved things but have a long way to go.
Your comments on here raise a chuckle as most people regard you as being silly (and not in a good way, I feel) but I’d far prefer you to be strong enough to handle something more truthful whilst stilling bringing insights you might have over all of the consoles/companies/etc.
double-o-dave
I agree with Bunimo. In fact, I think Blighty is actually in himself a subsidiary of Playstation ‘Entertainment’. I find him entertaining anyway. ;)
camdaz
“Improve the operation of the psn” I’ve not had any problems with it, although I’m not a heavy user.

Friends list not appearing, just a spinning circle in its place. Message received notification, go to messages, wait 2 minutes for it to appear. 2 examples, I could think of more.
Dylan Gregson
Yeah this is happening to me quite often lately. Also, messages are now taking longer to send. Used to be near instant, now it stays at 97% for a good 5 – 10 seconds.
englishgolfer
This is one thing I want addressed before DNLA, music playback and whatnot. A functioning friend’s list and messages being sent with no delays. Fix these (going slow on the ipad app now as well) and I’ll be a happy bunny, err, golfer.
DirtyHabit
My record so far is 56mins from ‘you’ve got a message’ to the message actually coming through!
I often get 20 min plus delays and had game invites that have expired by the time I’ve got them.
double-o-dave
I actually get message alerts or friend chat invite alerts on the PS iPhone App a few seconds before they actually come through on the PS4 itself which I find weird.
kjkg
Yeh my friends list is dodgy at times.
Also, and you may be able to do this already and I haven’t worked it out, but can we please get an option to disable notifications of when a friend has joined a chat group.
I really don’t care if they have unless I am being invited into it. And that’s rare. Youles, your still my one and only chat member I believe. Feel privilaged.
kjkg
*Privileged
camdaz
I did have a message notification but no message for 10 mins or so, forgot about that. They’ll sort it out eventually!
Pixel_nme
@kjkg you can stop those notifications, just go to Settings then into Notifications and disable When friends join a party, you will then only get notifications when your invited or if someone joins the party you are in ;)
DeadlyChipmunk
The irony would be it does actually release on time and breaks Drive Club =)
Foxhound_Solid
Tony is right. There are a few niggles which I hope get sorted. The messages is annoying even via the app. The fact that there isn’t a notification when friends sign in and out we well as players met, not listing them so if you want to add a friend you have to do it there and then.
Don’t get me wrong I’m completely in love with my PS4 (I’m getting a second for upstairs, PS TV and a Xperia Z to accompany them) and it’s the greatest console ever! But it does need to improve and that’s a good think.
PS3 had issues but comparing the PS3 today to PS3 almost a year in are night and day in difference.
PS4 will get there and they are only tiny niggles :-)
coxy1701
Looking forward to it gives me enough time to back up my data before I have to sell it due to moving down under.
double-o-dave
I better start looking through my USB sticks I’ve got scattered around the house and see which has the most memory. Can’t beat fleeing around on DriveClub with your own music. I had the game through the TV and music through an amp and speakers the other day but it always seems to sound more real/better when they both come through the same system when gaming’s involved.
Bilbo_bobbins
hopefully it will sort out the refresh rate of messages, which seem to take, in some cases, 24 hours to download.
