Maisie Williams Keen On Ellie Role In The Last Of Us Movie

Maisie Williams has done something you wouldn’t have thought possible for such a youthful, diminutive actor: She’s managed to be one of the most memorable, strongest characters in a television show that’s packed with memorable, strong characters. She’s one of the best things about Game of Thrones and her character, Arya Stark, is one of the biggest reasons I can’t wait for the new season of the hit TV show to start.

She’s the internet’s first choice to star as Ellie in the proposed movie version of The Last of Us so it’s perhaps unsurprising that she has met and talked with Sam Raimi (who’s set to produce) and Neil Druckmann (who directed the game). The meeting came about after Williams herself spotted the internet chatter, checked that Ashley Johnson (Ellie’s in-game voice) was behind her portrayal of the character and phoned her agent to let him know she’d like to do it.

It’s interesting that Williams was the catalyst behind this meeting – she approached Raimi and Druckmann through her agent. It’s also interesting that they’re obviously open to the idea as they offered her a moderating spot on the comic-con panel. Ultimately, her busy schedule and desire not to do a half-assed job means that never happened but it shows that all parties are positive about her involvement.

Williams is realistic about the speed at which these things move, and obviously a little reticent to commit to a project that’s nowhere near being ready for casting:

There’s no script, no director, and no anything else. So at this moment, it’s looking like, ‘Yes,’ but it’s still such early days. If they make it in 30 years, they can’t have a 40-year-old Ellie. So at the moment, it’s looking good, and I’d love to do it. Hell yeah.

It’s nice to see that a groundswell of fan opinion can drive these kind of meetings, even if they might ultimately never come to much. I think Williams would do a great job in the role but I suspect she might be busy with Game of Thrones for a while longer and with the film’s development being at such an early stage, it’s still far from a done deal.

Can you think of anyone you’d rather see portray Ellie? What about Joel, who would you like for that role when Naughty Dog’s undead-dodger makes it onto the big screen?

  1. Hugh Jackman would be a wonderful choice as Joel.

    • What a fantastic idea!

    • I’m not a big fan of Jackman and especially not when he tries to have an emotion other than “I’m going to stab you with my claws grrr.”
The difficult thing for me is seeing past the fact that Joel is basically Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead and letting any other actor play that role.

      • No. Andrew Lincoln looks awful with a beard.

      • Only problem I have with that idea would be that TLOU would then essentially become Walking Dead – The Movie.
The actor/character Grimes is indelibly linked to TWD, any attempt to cast him as a different character in another “zombie” show/film will become an extension of TWD by default.

      • You might not have seen the range that Jackman is genuinely capable of, in that case. He’d be fine covering the emotions that Joel goes through in the game.

Then again, if he’s Wolverine to you (no matter the film) you may well have to watch it but sellotape six knifes to the screen just in case. ;-)

      • I’m just not a fan of Jackman, I’ve seen him in loads and his emotional portrayal has always looked a bit forced and wooden to me.

I’m also not suggesting that Andrew Lincoln should be cast, just that the character of Joel is very similar to the character of Rick Grimes (not necessarily the Grimes from TV, either) so it’s going to be a difficult role for whoever ends up with it.

      • Ah, fair enough, fella. There’s actors that I know are considered good but I can’t stand the buggers. To each their own, eh? :-)

  2. I’ve always thought Joel reminded me a bit of Gerard Butler. Obviously in one of his more serious movies.

  3. if we are talking beards its got to be Chuck Norris!
not Chuck himself just his beard!
i can picture it now “coming in 2016 The Last Of Us starring Chuck Norris’s beard and that bird from Juno!

    • You, sir, have yourself a job in the film industry right there. No film will escape your blasé approach and sardonic wit. :-)
