If you are old you will remember the rather laughable claims that the PlayStation 2 was to bring Pixar quality graphics to games. It’s two additional consoles later but those claims look close to being fulfilled with the PlayStation 4 début of Ratchet & Clank.
The trailer above includes scenes from the movie mixed with footage from the accompanying PS4 game and you’d be hard pushed to tell which is which.
The new PS4 game is based on the movie, which in turn is based on the original Ratchet & Clank game but with characters and locations pulled from the many sequels.
“We knew early on that we didn’t want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2,” say Insomniac. “We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank (PS4) as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story as seen in the film. We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 titles while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.”
Classic weapons such as the Groovitron and wise-cracking robotic bodyguard Mr. Zurkon will return alongside new weapons such as the Pixelizer which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels.
A video of 8 minutes of full gameplay, including the boss battle glimpsed in the trailer above has also been released.

I like the look of this as I kind of missed out on this series in my youth as I was at the ‘obsessed with big manly games with blood and guts’ phase of my gaming life. Fortunately I am now old enough to play children’s games again.
