The Taken King Will Come With A Character Booster, New Gamescom Trailer Here

Sometimes Destiny can be an awesome game with rich rewards and fun times to be had. Other times it can be a dull and tedious grind in which you repeat the same missions over and over just to level up.

Activision have revealed that anyone purchasing The Taken King will get a booster which allows them to skip all that tedious grinding and boost your stats to the minimum level required for The Taken King, presumably that will be at least level 30.

That means anyone new to the game can skip the original Destiny, The House of Wolves and The Dark Below and jump straight in to the new game. It also means they will be ridiculous overpowered for the original story and have effectively bought the XP, skipping past gamers who have been grinding for months. Presumably the booster will also grant the character a selection of appropriate armour and weapons as well, again something that people have had to spend many hours playing for.

Frankly I’m a bit miffed, the booster will mean new players will be jumping in to the harder missions before they have picked up any skills. Day One of the Taken King and you, a seasoned Destiny gamer at level 34, could be matched for a Strike with someone who hasn’t played the game at all and bought their Level 30.

Anyway, here’s a new Gamescom trailer if you’re interested.

  1. Terrible idea, for the reason you have said! Vanilla players tackling the harder content with no background experience or a decent arsenal will be a pain during matchmaking.

It also makes me wonder whether they will be disregarding the light level on armour, meaning we are all dropped back to level 20. If this is the case, it will be difficult to decide which character to use the boost on, and a similar pain to level alts back to where they were.

As much as I love Destiny, I don’t want to be locked out of content I can already do, and regrind content I am already done with, because my armour becomes meaningless.

    • It’s already been mentioned somewhere that the light levelling system is being dropped in favour of a more XP based system, like the grind up to level 20. Hopefully, they will convert everyone’s current level to be equal.

  2. Yeah this article has some inaccuracies in it unfortunately. Light level is going with the arrival of ttk and is being replaced by a more traditional rpg levelling system for 1 – 40. It hasn’t been explained in any detail being that but it all sounds a bit baffling. Hopefully they’ll explain more about how it will work soon as I don’t really get it.

    • You’re still going to skip a huge chunk of grinding tho.

  3. Personally, I think the change from the light level is a good thing. The grind from 20 to my current level of 27 has seemed much worse than 1 to 20. Not keen on this booster thing though, it sounds very unfair. Maybe if they limited it to people who’ve completed the main campaign it would be better?
