In September last year Athlon Games announced it was working on a free to play Lord of the Rings game, but didn’t really give many details. We’re still in the dark about a lot of details but one big piece of news is the fact that Amazon Game Studios was the undisclosed partner Athlon had alluded to previously. Amazon is working on a Lord of the Rings series which will be set during the Second Age also known as Age of Númenor.
However, this MMO will not follow the Amazon series so we have no idea what Age or which stories will be the basis for the free to play MMO. We do know that it is set in a time that hasn’t really be explored so we’re unlikely to see fan favourite characters like Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, and the rest of the Fellowship. We also do not know when the Lord of the Rings MMO will be released nor which platforms it will eventually arrive on.
For all we know the MMO may take the clock right back to the beginning and the First Age, which could do with some exploring. We’ll find out eventually but Amazon is keeping the cards close to the chest. Like Smaug and his treasure.
