The art dealing fox Redd is back in Animal Crossing: New Horizons after the release of update 1.2.0, and he’s looking to offload painting and statues from his treasure trawler.
But as you’re trying to fill the new art gallery wing of your museum, you’ve got to beware that Redd might try to offload a shonky counterfeit on you. Blathers won’t accept that to the collection, so you’ll have to keep a keen eye for how to avoid this. Here’s how to spot fake art in Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler.
We’ve got plenty of other walkthroughs and tips for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and more on the way. Visit our game hub to check those out.
How to get Redd on your island
There’s a few hurdles to jump through before Redd will visit your island. Firstly you need to update the game to version 1.2.0, and then go and visit Blathers in the museum. Talking to the curatorial owl, he’ll tell you of his plans to open an art gallery in the museum and to bring him some works of art to appraise.
The next day, Isabelle’s daily report will talk of a shifty looking character being spotted on your island. That’s Redd, and you just have to run around and find him. As luck would have it, he’s got some artwork that he’s trying to sell – don’t ask how he got it, OK? He’ll give you an astronomical price to start with, but turn this down and he’ll give you a much more reasonable offer. Purchase this piece of artwork.

Take this piece of art to Blathers and show it to him. He’ll ask you to donate it, and if you do, he’ll announce that he’s got some renovations to do. This will happen the next day – Isabelle is on hand again to announce the museum renovations in her daily update – and open the day after.
With the art gallery open, keep an eye out for Redd on your island again. Talking to him, he’ll say that he’s acquired a boat where you can buy art and furniture. Tell him you want to check it out and he’ll dash off to his trawler, which is moored off the “secret beach” on the northern edge of your island – you’ll either need the ladder or island editing tools to reach this spot.
What does Redd sell?
In Redd’s trawler he sells both furniture and art, but while you can buy as much of the furniture as you want, you’ll be restricted to one piece of art per day that he visits. As mentioned above, some of the art can be fake, and Blathers won’t accept the worthless junk. So don’t mess up!

How to spot fake art
All of the artwork that Redd sells is based off real world works, and spotting a fake will be down to checking it against the real one. The differences are different in New Horizons compared to New Leaf, so you can’t use old memories of that game to spot what to look for.
