Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced during the PS5 reveal event, and after the initial wave of hype there was a bit of confusion. Was this an expansion, a standalone title, or a full blown sequel? The messaging became somewhat confused when a Sony rep said it was an expansion. Then Insomniac Games came out and confirmed that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone game but it is not a full-blown Spider-Man 2 game.
Insomniac has confirmed the new game’s setting by saying it is set a year after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man and will be taking place in winter. The area of focus will be Miles’ neighbourhood of Harlem which will be the central area of the new story. In Spider-Man: Miles Morales awar between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out, putting the whole city at risk. When it comes to scope think of it being like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
What of the PS5 features themselves? Here’s what Creative Director Brian Horton had to say:
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.”
You also do not have to worry about Peter. According to Brian his story is far from over so, yes, there will be a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 further down the line, but Mile Morales should not be missed if you are a fan as it will add new layers to the overall arch of the franchise.
