Naughty Dog just axed its worst Uncharted game

Naughty Dog has announced that it has pulled the plug on the worst game in its Uncharted series. Originally released in 2016, mobile puzzler Uncharted: Fortune Hunter is no longer available to download from the App Store or Google Play.

The Uncharted developer made the following statement: “as of today, in-game purchases of treasure maps and bags of orbs have been disabled, and the game is no longer available for download from the Apple App or Google Play stores. However, you may continue to play the game in offline mode until it is removed from your mobile device.”

Fortune Hunter came at a time when Sony was still dabbling in the realm of mobile gaming. A reason for the game’s retirement was not given though it’s removal from storefronts is likely due to lack of player activity and dwindling revenue from in-app purchases.

We covered the game back at launch, mainly drawn in thanks to promise of unlockable content for Uncharted 4’s superb online multiplayer. Here’s what we had to say:

Even for this mobile game there are comparisons to be drawn between Uncharted and Tomb Raider. For those who remember, Square Enix launched the superb Lara Croft GO, a surprisingly intuitive game that distilled the series’ core essence via a series of turn-based puzzles.

Although there are definitely similarities, to call Fortune Hunter a blatant rip-off is a tad unfair. The two main points of comparison come from their wildly altered visual styles and a grid-based approach to puzzle solving. However, where Lara Croft GO is imbued with a genuine sense of adventure, Uncharted feels more like a sequence of challenges.

It’s been almost five years since the last Uncharted game launched, though the series has been thrust back into the spotlight in 2022. On the PS5 (and very soon, PC) treasure hunters have been able experiencing both Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy with a range of visual and technical enhancements. Then there’s the success of the Uncharted movie which was actually pretty entertaining, actually!
