What We Played #573 – Gotham Knights, Jackbox 9, A Plague Tale: Requiem & Resident Evil 4

A Plague Tale Requiem Header

It’s Friday, and regulars on TheSixthAxis will know what that means: it’s time to round-up what we played in the past seven days and pick out any highlights.

I’m going to break the rules though, because I got to play Resident Evil 4 last week. I just wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about it then. I am, of course, referring to the rather splendid remake that is far more considered than just a graphical replacement. That was also joined by my review of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, another great take on turn-based tactics that’s thoroughly different to the original.

Now, as you’ll see below, a lot of people tried and failed to steal thunder from having played games with me this week. So, since I’m writing this week’s entry and not Dom, I get to steal their thunder stealing. I played Jackbox Party Pack 9 with a motley assortment of people, and dipped into Gotham Knights with Aran to check out the co-op multiplayer for his review.

The self-professed ringleader of “jacking Tef’s box” was Nic B, which I don’t think I agreed to, but at least he said “that was a fun evening!”. He also played Pokémon Go (as always), and turned in our review of “the rat game” A Plague Tale: Requiem, giving it a whopping 9/10!

We can presume that Tuffcub basically just played Destiny 2 this past week and move swiftly on to Miguel. He played the gory Japanese visual novels Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child – the announcement of Silent Hill F written by Ryukishi07 has him really stoked, by the way – and married that to Splatoon 3, Fortnite, Thumper, and some Jackbox Party Pack 9 – “Oh yeah, I Jacked Tefs Box too, was a great night loads of fun.”

Gamoc was another Jackbox partier – “And what a nice box it was, too” – but has made it up to 54 hours within Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous. He’s now a lich queen!

Finally, someone not concerning themselves with my box, Reuben played Disney Dreamlight Valley, getting absorbed by the Pixar event and this week’s new content, which helped to fix technical problems… and make some new ones. He’s also been playing Alien: Isolation while streaming, and plugging away at the “excellent if a touch derivative” Prodeus on Game Pass.

Steve suffered through Covid again last weekend, and did so while playing Scorn for review. It’s “definitely a divisive title, but one that will live long in the memory and has got me going down an anti-natalism philosophy route that has distracted me from being ill somewhat.” After that he played A Plague Tale: Requiem, “which is a great sequel.”

Aran played Gotham Knights for our review and seems to have enjoyed it more than some out there – “I found it fun to go around in even if the story isn’t the best.” He’s also been playing the addictive and snappy Marvel Snap.

Nick P’s been sticking with his usual games – Dead by Daylight, Overwatch 2 and Fortnite – but has continued with playthroughs of The Evil Within 2 and Resident Evil, while also starting up Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed for review.

Lastly, Jim’s been playing a mythological dad simulator that you’ll get to hear more about very, very soon.

Now then, what have you been playing?

  1. I’ve played precisely nothing, as I’ve been abroad on holiday for the last week or so and forgot my Vita. I’m about to board my flight home though, so I’m hoping to have played something by next week!

  2. Well, there was the PS+ Extra/Premium update this week, so it’s no surprise I checked out some things from there.

Like a bunch of Dragon Quest games. Builders is quite fun, and I’d never got around to Heroes II, so that’s a good start. And I’d never got around to Inside either, which isn’t as good as Limbo for reasons I can’t quite work out. It’s the same basic walking to the right simulator, I guess. With the same “you randomly died, so try it again and don’t die” thing. Just doesn’t seem as good.

And The Medium. Much more ambitious than Bloober Teams previous games (which I liked a lot). Enjoying it so far, and the whole two worlds thing just enhances the fairly simple gameplay. (Not that there’s anything wrong with the gameplay – not everything needs to be new and exciting). Nice use of the DualSense features too. Trophies seem to be a bit broken though. A whole bunch popped at once when I loaded the game a second time, and one popped up way before it’s supposed to, I think. I shall definitely recommend it while it’s on PS+.

Also managed to finish off YS VIII (again, from PS+) and didn’t get the bad ending. Or the good ending. Too many easy to miss bits that make getting that good ending impossible (I think) if you don’t do a certain thing at a certain time. And the usual JRPG nonsense of very grindy trophies, so I’ll not be bothering there and moving on to YS IX next.

Plus some jumping around between all the other things I’ve been playing lately. I’m changing games as quickly as we change prime ministers lately.

Oh, and Steve Jackson’s Sorcery! was on sale. An interesting take on something I’m old enough to remember being new and exciting at the time. Glad to see they just took the books and turned them into a game, when there was probably a temptation (and more money) in taking the license and slapping the name on some action RPG thing.
