After racing through fifty upcoming games for the year ahead, we’ve finally come to the pointiest of pointy ends in our Most Wanted list for 2024, and it’s a real crowd pleaser of a PlayStation 5 exclusive. That’s right, it’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The middle chapter in this retelling of the PlayStation 1 classic JRPG, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be a continuation of Final Fantasy VII Remake in many ways, but where that first game was perhaps a little constrained by catering to the PlayStation 4 hardware and the weight of expectation from fans, Rebirth can cut loose a little on the PlayStation 5.
So what’s the same and what’s new? Well, the fundamental gameplay will carry on from Remake, in particular with the shift to action first RPG combat. You’ll wail away at enemies in real time with standard attacks, running around in battle arenas before unleashing powered up abilities to deal much more substantial damage to your foes. You’ll be able to jump back and forth between which party member you control, with AI taking the reigns for any character that you’re not directly handling at that time.
Rebirth brings new Synergy moves to the table to try and enhance the team play between battle buddies. Synergy Skills are used from a guard stance, giving you a pair of options depending on your party composition, while the Synergy Abilities are then equivalent to Limit Break attacks for an ultimate twin strike.
As for the story, well, we’ve been hands on with the game late last year and got to play the Fated Mt. Nibel Mission that flashed back to a time before, as well as set foot in Under Junon. Square Enix are still reimagining what the Final Fantasy VII story looks like for this remake trilogy, so they’re fleshing out certain characters, but have also been teasing that this could have a few more unexpected twists in the tale.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was a fairly linear affair, and Rebirth goes to great lengths to let you branch off and explore a bit more. You’ll have more open world areas that you can roam around on the back of a Chocobo, looking for Fiend Sightings to engage in combat challenges against local beasties. There’s also baby Chocobo that you can find and follow to reestablish Chocobo stops.
All of which is to say that, after loving Final Fantasy VII Remake, we are well up for another chapter. From the modernised and expanded gameplay, to the mysterious new story elements, and just the joys of seeing over the top cutscenes with outlandish moments, we can’t wait.
Thankfully we won’t really have to! Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be releasing exclusively for PlayStation 5 on 29th February 2024.

This countdown has been hugely depressing, it truly is a dark age for videogames. There are probably 5 games in the whole list I will actually buy.
