Sony’s SVP Michael Denny Says Gran Turismo 6 Is Heading To PS3

That Sony are working on Gran Turismo 6 should surprise nobody – we’ve had enough hints and leaks to go as far as locking down certain tracks, for example, and GT5 was one of Sony’s top selling titles this generation – another game in the series is inevitable.

But did anyone else think the next game would be better suited to a PS4 release? Or perhaps even a Vita specific one, especially after the visual treat that was the PSP game.

“Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6, and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, GTA,” SCEE’s SVP Michael Denny said in a recent interview.

Ubisoft are holding a press event next week with the invite simply being the Assassin’s Creed logo. We’ll be there to let you know what that’s all about.

There were rumblings of “unannounced PS3 games” in New York last week, but despite my efforts nobody wanted to talk. Perhaps GT6 was one of those games.

“It’s important for our content to have that kind of longevity because, as I was saying [about the PS Vita], the games that come through are going to get better and better over time,” he added, confirming Sony are still behind the PS3.

Sadly, PS3 games won’t work on PS4 – “there’s a lot of expense in [backwards compatibility] and you have to make decisions as to what’s really important to the gaming community” – but there’s some chatter to suggest a few games this year will also have PS4-native versions.

Yamauchi has said recently he isn’t ready to talk about GT6’s release date.

  1. What a weird slip! Guess it’ll be one of the cross-gen games Sony seem to be pushing now like Destiny etc.

  2. I’d prefer GT6 to be a PS4 game rather than PS3., the techs been outdated for too long.

  3. They would most likely release on both to get max money as GT games cost a massive amount.

Of course by the time it’s out PS3 probably won’t even be being manufactured then :D

  4. I think this is possible.

Drive Club is what will feed the racers until GT7 is released, which will be a PS4 only game probably.

  5. A bit weird as Gran Turismo is their biggest system seller.

  6. Wow, that’s a big surprise, releasing the game on PS3 when the PS4 will probably be well established.
I think they’ll probably implement a cross-gen garage install like they did with GT PSP and GT5 if GT6 turns out to be a cross gen game.
Weird strategy though, GT6 could have been one of the top PS4 console shifters at launch.
Great news for all of us that are holding onto our PS3’s rather than trading to help pay for the PS4 anyway.

    • A very big surprise. You would have just about guaranteed it would be on PS4.
I hope there is a cross-gen garage install as it was was a good way of boosting your garage.

  7. I think GT5 killed my love for this series. It just want fun enough. The only way I would buy it if it come out on Ps4 I think. I’m so looking forward to next gen. :D

    • GT5 is the ONLY game that still regularly in my PS3 years after it’s release.

You only have to take a look at GT Planet to see I am not alone. Whilst ForzaPlanet is a barenwasteland, GTPlanet is still masively popular.

I guess some people got fooled by the hate-spin of “GT Delayed yet again” nonsense (Full Gran Turismo games have always arrived mid-gen, any gaming blog that suggest otherwise would be better of writing for take-a-break magazine).

GT games are pixel-perfect, physics perfect racing similators, not the arcade racers that some seem to believe they are. It’s perfection takes time.

      • I too found it lacked fun, I just hated having to go shopping before just about every race (I did give up on the game early and im sure it becomes less frequent as the car collection builds).

Also you said “Pixel perfect” Have you not seen the shadows, it looks like the shadow on a car made from lego. Not sure if they patched this because the game hasnt been in my ps3 since about 3 days after launch.

      • I do pretty much agree with UKZ-NEM really. I did give GT5 a good go though, but haven’t played it since update 2.0. What I am surprised about it hasn’t been on PS+ yet. Made it will come.

      • The idea of buying a new car as I didn’t meet requirements annoyed me so much! Wasn’t fun as older GT’s and by that I mean GT1 and GT2 lol.

      • “GT games are pixel-perfect”

You have clearly played a completely different game.

      • Pixel perfect – lol, try driving a non-premium car and then use that statement.

  8. In terms of sales potential, its a wise choice. Show that the PS3 is still getting great support, watch those numbers grow and as every PS3 makes a profit now its easy money for Sony. Still to get GT5 and the Academy Edition looks mighty good. :)

I do hope that for backwards compatability they introduce a module of some kind, have it purchased seperately but as long people know the options there. they gotta facilitate PS3 support in some way to make the jump easier. But we’ll see how it goes.

  9. Maybe it’ll be GT6 prologue for PS3 which will give them time to develop the full fat version for PS4 then all rewards and cars earned cross installed via the save file. :O

    • That sounds sensible. Or maybe it’ll be a simpler game like GT3 was? I can’t imagine a full-blown effort being made for the end of a generation and I’d be shocked if they bothered updating the graphics. I’ve still got the GTHD demo from 2007 installed, it’s amazing how little changed visually between that and GT5!

      • Also GT5 prologue which was a decent blast and where my gravatar was snatched from, the original Ferrari F2007 based on Kimi’s car back in the day :P

      • History in the making :) I still haven’t unlocked any F1 cars in GT5, I’m thinking I should whip it out for a few races again.

    • Don’t forget the hard work has already been done on constructing the engine for it on PS3 therefore the next title will be an asset building piece much like each 2nd game has done before.
Following that the next GT game will be a PS3 release, I have no doubts that they have something up and running on the PS4, even just as a technical exercise.

  10. PS4 native versions should be easy (for mainstream titles) with enough power and simple architecture to adapt a PC version of the game. PD did so much with GT5 I’m surprised that we could be hearing of 6 so soon. I’d rather like to see what PD can do with the Vita and it’s features, and also of course PS4. It would make sense to make a Vita version, the sales would rocket probably, but PD don’t sound like the kind of devs to get bollocked by Sony; not with a 6 year dev time.

    • I don’t think there’ll be a Vita version as I think Sony will be pushing first party developers to make use of the cross platform play.
