Hideo Kojima has finally waved goodbye to Metal Gear in a solemn and moving video which marks the completion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The ten minute video features Kojima talking to various staff for the game, including voice actors Robin Atkin Downes and Troy Baker – who are keen to express their gratitude to the infamous video game auteur.
The rest of the video is dedicated to one fan in particular, Sean Paul Gillespie who succumbed to cancer this year at the very young age of 21. Sean had emailed the staff at Kojima Productions during crunch time, which Kojima had stated spurred on and encouraged the staff during such a painstaking process. Hideo goes to meet Sean’s family at their home, where he sincerely thanks them and Sean and announces that the game is finally complete. Touchingly, Kojima apologises for it taking so long and thanks his fans for their support.
The video is well worth a watch – it serves as both a poignant dedication to Sean and a heartfelt farewell to a series which has spanned 28 years. There’s dust in my eye.

I seem to have something in my eye too.. that was heartbreaking but i’m glad Kojima shared it with us.

I liked that, it was sincere. Sean’s story was very sad but I feel pleased that they shared it in the video. His family clearly love and miss him but may not understand his love of games, we do though. The end of the road for Metal Gear is sad too but it’s been given some perspective here. Kojima and his teams have done very well, many thanks to them for entertaining us these many years.

Well that was emotional. I have never been able to get in to MGS, but I can see how much he loved making it, and it makes me wish I could get the same love out of playing it. I might actually pick it up just to give it one last try.

It feels wrong that Kojima didn’t visit David Hayter to thank him for being the western voice of Snake and discuss MGS with him but I suspect either Hayter and Kojima are doing one last troll or Hayter was done with MGS as soon as he got replaced.
It was a very emotional video and it brought tears of Phantom Pain to my eyes. Hideo never gave a Bleep about what’s acceptable in a game and what isn’t to a degree, he just wrote what he wanted and he loved working on MGS. It’ll be interesting to see if he retires or if he sets up Kojima Productions mark 2.

Wow, that was one hell of a final visit. I don’t even care for the franchise but it was a lovely video as he has huge respect from pretty much everyone in the industry. Wonderful stuff.

Wonderful vid. For those who haven’t played others in the series, just get this one, it’s simply incredible.
