Things are about to change for Paragon, Epic Games’ raw take on the MOBA genre. While in closed beta, this new entrant has managed to carve out its own niche despite the constant noise from Dota 2, League of Legends, and other rivals.
It’s over-the-shoulder camera, Unreal Engine 4 graphics, and presence on PlayStation 4 have all helped Paragon in standing out from the crowd. However, as Epic Games has stated in a new blog post, there are aspects of the game they weren’t happy with – aspects they hope to remedy in Paragon’s next update, arriving on June 21st.
Player “commitment” will be the main thrust according to Epic. As such, the ability for heroes to enter Travel Mode (read: sprint) will be stripped from the latest version of Paragon. Instead, players are imbued with the power to teleport across the game map.
By limiting movement speed, teams will need to more tactical in their positioning. Up until now, Travel Mode has allowed players to zip between lanes whenever a fight is going down. By swapping this feature out, there will be less time to respond to ambushes (or “ganks”).
While it may sound like a bad thing, it will hopefully speed up matches and reward cunning team plays. Having put several hours into Paragon the one thing I dislike is the length of matches, many of them prolonged due to the allowance of quick defensive maneuvers. Of course teleporting will allow players to respond just as fast though its limited use will mean sacrificing one’s current position. I guess that’s the commitment Epic is referring to.
There are many more changes on the way. We’ve tried to condense them all below but for a detailed look, check out the official patch notes.
- Traversal Mode (sprinting) replaced with limited teleport.
Portable card shops added. - CP gained from minions tweaked to favour last-hitters instead being shared among the whole team.
- Minions slowed down, come in waves of four.
- Killing Jungle creeps will only reward last-hitters.
- Super minions will spawn regularly among normal minion waves.
- Inhibitors will need to be actively revived using an “Orb Prime”. Take it from the enemy capture point and back to your own to restore Inhibitors.
Players can attack enemy Harvesters without being traced on the mini-map, making wards even more important.
UPDATE: Starting Tuesday, 16th August there will be a free open beta on PlayStation 4.
