Those ever-so-secret “sources” have been whispering secrets again, this time to Bloomberg and they have told them that a PlayStation 5 firmware update this summer will add support for additional internal storage. Sony have responded to the report with the following statement.
As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later.
It is also reported that than the firmware update will increase the speed of the fan inside the console to prevent overheating.
The PlayStation 5 currently ships with a 825GB solid state drive (SSD) that, after space is reserved for the operating system, save files and media, leave the user with around 667GB of space. While that’s a decent amount of space when games clock in around 30-40GB some persistent games are now huge. Call of Duty: Warzone requires at least 100GB of free space for each update, Red Dead Redemption 2 is over 100GB, The Elder Scrolls Online hits around 86GB, and until recently Destiny 2 was over 160GB, but Bungie have reworked the game and made it much smaller.
At present you can connect an external drive to your PlayStation 5 to store games, but you can only use it for PlayStation 4 titles. We’ve got a handy guide for that.
Additional storage will be very welcome but it will come at a cost, at present a terabyte of storage M.2 storage will set you back well over £100 and Sony are going recommend (or possibly even enforce) that you use storage from certain manufactures. This is too ensure that the additional storage can run as fast as the existing PS5 storage.
