Far Cry 3 Shows Up Online

Listings have appeared on two Swedish online retailers this week for Far Cry 3, in both regular and collector’s editions. Very little is currently known about the game, and it has yet to even be officially announced but with these listings appearing – both with official-looking logos, and one with what looks like Ubisoft-provided placeholder art – it doesn’t look like we’ll be waiting too long for a confirmation of the game’s existence.

Back in November last year, a Ubisoft scriptwriter revealed that the game was in production, and looked “pretty exciting”. Before even shipping Far Cry 2 in 2008,  narrative designer Patrick Redding said that “there are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it’s safe to say we’ll continue to explore it,” making it likely that the next entry in the franchise would return to Africa. The styling of the FC3 placeholder art listed on Webhallen (posted above) also suggests that fire would return as a major gameplay element.

The listings indicate that the game is coming to PS3, 360 and PC, although it is marked for a 2010 release, which is pretty unlikely. Far Cry 2 was released to mixed reviews, but clearly sold well enough for Ubisoft to approve a sequel. So what would you like to see in a new Far Cry game?

  1. Great stuff. All they need to do is get rid of the checkpoints across the map and get rid of your malaria and it will be fantastic. Loved how the weapons degraded, maybe they could add a cleaning kit to your inventory so you could clean/repair them?

  2. Never played FarCry?

    Is it any good?

    • You should be able to snap up FC2 for next to nothing, its got flaws but is well worth checking out

It does have a game breaking bug where if you select a certain character at the start up screen on of the missions just doesn’t happen, I can’t remember which one and Ubi never bothered patching it

*edit* Play as ‘Marty’ and the now infamous barge mission glitch doesn’t happen

      • Thanks mate, will check it out, think my bro has a dusty copy ;-)

  3. I loved Far Cry 2, rushed through it for review without any problems and then was playing through it at a more leisurely pace on my proper account when I hit (one of) the game-breaking glitches that Ubisoft never bothered patching out so I stopped playing it.
I’m really excited for a third but a tad worried that it might have similar problems that are ignored again.

  4. Good news.
I found a lot of flaws with FarCry2 (and encountered the game breaking one) but on balance it was ok

hopefully they work out how to do more with user created content as that was a great but under-utilised feature… the fps genre needs more breadth on consoles and if they can enhance the level creator in some way then it can only be a good thing

  5. Im sorry but I get confused. Was this the third person game, with the dude with the blonde hair and beard?

    • An open world FPS, in a stunning environment, even back in 2008 could probably teach RDR a thing or two

Take a look at this mon-tage

Keep watching to the end credits to see the awesome map editor in action

… in fact fuck it, i’ve just convinced myself to re-buy it

      • Damn it you convinced me to and I was trying to save some money

      • Be warned, it does have unpatched bugs (thanks Ubisoft) but around them is a gorgeous & pretty good game. Just make sure you pick Marty as your playable character so you don’t encounter the main bug.

Some people criticise the walking/driving/hand-gliding to and from missions, but that was my favourite bit.

      • I had it before on PS3 (actually got the special edition that came with nothing extra for some reason) and got near the end but just gave up cant see to remember why though

Never came across any bugs when I played it, well dont think I did anyway

    • No, that was Mercenaries 2.

      • cadabena you seriously need to get some more points or just off your current number

  6. I enjoyed FC2 quite a lot, only played through it once, but that was enough for me, I may well return to it one day. I never encountered any game breaking glitches. I loved the way your gun degraded, and the way you could watch your character pulling bullets out when critically wounded. Real gruesome. The malaria got a tad annoying, but as long as you kept your meds in check you’d be alright. I wasn’t too fond of the end, or the way your buddies or whatever would die without you being able to help them out. I found I was never able to bond with them long enough to care about their death, I was just annoyed I used a whole load of them syringes on someone who wasn’t going to be able to be revived.
Even so, FC3 would be something I would be interested in buying, lets hope it happens, soon.

  7. i really enjoyed far cry 2 but travelling around was really annoying and strecthed the story a lot. the graphics and environements were really good, and i liked the way u needed to get malaria tablets and the guns became rusty. but what made it 4 me was the map editor which is still go on a lot. far cry 3= less gun recoil, an easier way to travel eg plane, less glitches and the map editor, perfect game :)

  8. I found FC2 to be, forgive my choice of words, crap. I’ve read the amazing reviews, and found the game to interesting for the first couple of hours, but then I found it to be more repetitive than Assassin’s Creed and GTAIV together: 2hours to get to mission, two hours to travel to target, 2seconds engaging enemies, 2 hours to travel to next mission. And I, personally, hated the colours of the game, the game was too yellow, even when in the jungle. But, since I have the urge to buy everything Ubi Montreal makes, I think I’ll buy this one.

  9. I just hope they add better stealth to FC3 and use more time on removing bugs. As other already has mentioned, FC2 had some really nasty game-stopping bugs, but also trophy bugs >_<

FC2 was really pretty, so considering we properly see FC3 in 2011, I can't wait to see some screenshots from the game, as three years of progress can't be bad :)

  10. Considering the Dunia engine (a modified version of CryEngine2) which powered FC2 has already been given the 3D treatment with Avatar, we could probably guess that FarCry3 will be Far Cry 3D

    • I thiought Dunia was from the original CryEngine, not CryEngine 2.
