8EA are doing it, and Ubisoft want to do it. But we didn’t think Sony would be doing it: charging for playing online with second hand copies of games – the latest title being ModNation Racers for the PSP.
In the latest PSN Store Update is this: “ModNation Racers – Online Entitlement (Download only if the in-pack Online Entitlement Voucher is missing, or is no longer valid from your retail copy) (£7.99/€9.99)”
Indeed, TSA regular jimmy-google has pointed out SCEE’s Mike Kebby’s comment on this: “The digital copy comes with the online entitlement packaged with it, the retail copy comes with a code inside. We offer this purely for people who buy a second-hand copy and would not get the code that allows them to play online.”
Looks like it’ll happen with more and more games down the line. “I couldn’t comment on other publishers, but I think it’s a safe assumption to believe we’ll see it happen more often yes,” said Kebby.
