The “What will Kinect cost?” merry-go-round continues a-spinning, with retailer ShopTo quoting their RRP for Microsoft’s new room-destroyer at a princely £129.99 in the UK. A release date is also quoted – November 19th. Officially the device’s price is still under consideration, but it’s looking highly likely that the $149.99 US figure (also still to be ratified by Microsoft) will not be translating into a sub £100 comparative amount in the UK. Can’t wait for the euro equivalent.
What say you? Too high? Just right for the technology on offer? Are UK gamers getting ripped off based on current currency exchange rates? Have your say in the comments. It will make you feel better.

Too high. Apparently ShopTo are so worried about the price that they have urged Microsoft to lower it.

Agreed. For 2 active players, that’s no better than a Move, really, specially with the lowered prices (from shopto, no less!), and depending on what controllers are needed, that Move is then 4P too and you don’t necessarily need the sub controllers…
Still, for 2 people, this is roughly par with Move.

I think Move would be cheaper for two players as it seems all you’ll usually need is the camera + 2 controllers, which comes to £78.70 (@ShopTo)

Remember reading that ShopTo said pre-orders are, really, really, REALLY low.

Apparently I read somewhere that it costs M$ £100 to build it, so they really have ballsed up here.

Not surprised pre-orders are really really low. Joke of a price. You can get a 2nd hand wii on ebay for cheaper than that, and if motion control’s what you’re after, the wii is considerably better. Money grabbing idiots just lost the battle already.

Will that include any games/demos to go with it? Seems pretty steep to me for what it will offer. Its going to put off the casual market unless they already have an Xbox in the house.

I believe it doesn’t include any games or demos. Might be wrong though

I guess this explains why they quietly increased the price of their Arcade console in the UK a few months back. It would look pretty bad if a little Kinect webcam (from a non-techy perspective) was sat next to an entire console at the same price!!!
I can’t wait to see Microsoft’s campaign for this! I know you can get into technicalities about Kinect vs Move, but at the end of the day Move seems easier to get your head around in terms of pricing – 50 quid for a starter pack, 30 quid for an extra controller, 20 quid for an optional navigation controller etc, they’re all price points we are used to already. Paying £130 for an all singing and dancing 3D webcam is something new…

I was considering buying an Xbox with natal so I could play games with my daughter (she hasnt got the hang of controllers with all those buttons yet) and video chat on the tv with family in the states but at this price and the lack of software im seeing im afraid Microsoft are just going to have to do without my money for now.

Get a NES, only two buttons and a dpad. Gaming purity

Why would you need to pay £130 (or £299 if you need the console as well) to be able to chat to your family in the States? You could do that with the PS Eye and the PS3, or a £10 webcam and Skype on a PC, or even on an Xbox with the Live Vision Cam (which comes with Your In The Movies EyeToy style game on Amazon for £22).
I like how Microsoft try to sell basic functionality like webcam chat and voice commands as the dawn of a new technological revolution, but the truth is all that aspect of the system can be done now on various systems (including their own) for a fraction of the price.
If you already have a PS3 I wouldn’t be in any rush for Kinect, at least not until a few months after release to see how it goes. There are already a number of basic motion based games to download for PS3 to use with just the PS Eye, it would be a lot cheaper way to ‘test the water’ with your daughter than going out spending hundreds of pounds on a promise! EyePet is a winner with my niece too, and she can’t even use the Wii properly yet!

My parents do not own a PS3 but we use MSN when we chat with a camera. Unfortunately getting the family cramped around 2 pcs with tiny cams on small screens is abit trying and the thought of doing everything from the comfort of my couch and talking through the tv would be a much better option for us. It obviously isnt the only thing I’m interested in natal for but it’s a feature i’d see myself using alot because of the ease of use.

Yes, far too much. Was expecting about 75-100 pounds really. This is 65% of the cost of the console for what is essentially just a peripheral. Casual product, not so casual price.

Yeah – it’s just a camera!

The fact people are going to consider is that you can buy an entire wii for that money. Obviously it’s not a fair comparison but neither was an Xbox 360 arcade vs a 60Gb PS3 but it works on the ignorant mass market!

It is a fair comparison for people who are only looking for that “casual” experience though.

You can buy a Wii for that.
I can’t see casual gamers going into a shop a picking a 360 plus Kinect when the Wii is available for around £130-£140. I’m not sure many 360 owners would pick it up over a wii. It’s a hugh start up cost but at least thats the only one unless MS make sure you need a Gold membership to get the most from it.
I’m not sure who MS are going for with that sort of pricing. There are no killer titles announced yet. They need Kinect to be significantly cheaper than a Wii console.

Im glad its not just me that thinks this is a silly entry price.
I will stick with my new Xbox for now (2 weeks tomorrow!) and maybe check this out if the price halfs which is unlickely.
You have to wonder who will buy it, if you can pick up a current Elite for £150 which is a steal why would you want to pay an extra £120 just so you can play some waggle and speak to your xbox?
