November was a good month for the PSP with 256,292 units being sold. The suspicion is that many of those were sold in anticipation of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd’s launch.  That hasn’t stopped December starting crazily well for the PSP.

We’ve already noted that the latest Monster Hunter game itself sold over 2.14 million copies last week.  It also helped the PSP to set a new weekly sales record.  Famitsu are reporting that a staggering 326,629 PSPs were sold in Japan last week.

With a PSP-3000 being about 2cm deep that’s a pile over 4 miles high.  Laid end to end the 17cm wide PSPs would form a line 34 and a half miles long.  And while I’m being silly with numbers in an effort to pad out a short news post, collectively, sans packaging, those PSPs would weigh almost 61 (UK long) tons.

When I revisit Japan’s December hardware sales in early January expect an impressive total for the PSP.

  1. Dead and doomed my posterior!
Quite clearly this shows that a good game release can happily spur on sales of a console…

  2. I’m not very good with converting miles to kilometers, maybe you should add those also, the next time! =P
But that sounds pretty good btw..

    • 1 mile = 1.62 Km.

    • I thought as the PSP dimensions are metric you’d be able to guess/work out kilometres.

      2cm * 326,629 PSPs = 653,258cm = 6.53258km
      17cm * 326,629 PSPs = 5,552,693cm = 55.52693km

    • Each to their own but my PSP Go is played on evey week and the storage was maxed out a while ago due to the quantity of games (that includes a full 8GB memory stick too).

I’m in no rush for a PSP2. Leave at least another 12 months in Europe.

  4. Forgive my ignorance but what on earth is Monster Hunter? The second coming?

  5. @shields_t A somewhat popular game franchise in Japan. :-)

Basically, you run around a fantasy realm hunting monster to kill or collect them. Bit like Pokemon would be with 60ft tall fire-breathing Pikachus. [Disclaimer: I haven't played either game so am probably completely wrong.] :-)

    • Almost…. you travel around the realms searching for materials for weapons and armour… this of course features a revolutionary system were the game will read your minds.

      Like for example..
“darn need to get some Khezu Steak or any other rare material”
instead you will get Pale hide (I think?), but when your not thinking about Khezu Steak it appears!! (after a few slays of Khezu)

its rather addictive…. thats Monster Hunter don’t know how it happened
