SCEE Seek To Clarify The Announcement Delay

Sony, we assume, must be fans of the Barenaked Ladies, having taken a week since the PSN went down to actually letting their customer base know what’s going on.  Well, pretty much a week, give or take a day.

Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE, has posted on the blog regarding this delay.

“There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised,” he said. “We learned there was an intrusion 19th April and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident.”

“It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly yesterday evening.”

The reaction to the news has split Sony’s customer base: some are furious at the way this has been handled from Sony, some are worried about their credit card details or ID theft, and some are nonchalant about the whole thing.

  1. I’ve cancelled my card and now just waiting for sony to give us a time frame of when they’ll be back up and running.

  2. I fall mostly into the nonchalent camp, but it’s very hard to believe that a tech company like Sony took so long to identify the scope of the breach.

  3. If anyone still has any questions or concerns then you should check out the Official Sony FAQ:

  4. A lot of hate thrown at sony (see cvg!) but what confuses me is that live was down for longer as a paid for service andhow many time a Microsoft operating system has been hacked? Why is the hate only at Sony? I’m poo’d off about it but don’t hate Sony for it. It’s like having stuff stolen from your car then blaming Ford for not securing it properly. I always new there was a risk to using credit card details so bought credit. And even if my card details were taken (has happened before) then I get a new one.
I can understand hatred from loser fanboys but I find media sites throw as much crop these days. Getting tiresome.
ALL SYSTEMS come with risk, even the banks.

    • Well maybe they handled this real bad. I mean, a week after they know about the break-in they tell us: hey, all of your personal data have been stolen and maybe you cc details too.

      A warning would’ve been nice.

      • Perhaps. Maybe this is a lesson all companies could learn. I imagine they Didn’t know the level of the breach. I work at IT company an our systems get attacks continuously but it is difficult to know when there are breaches and if so what the attack is aimed at. Could just be random attacks sometimes. Either way I suppose Sony could have said that the system was breached and be vigilant just in case. Of course, they would I’ve been the first company to ever do this. Wonder how long when there are security lapses on my pc, mac or iPhone before an update is added. Should those companies say there is possible breach, don’t use your machine until we send you security patches? I get them few times a month.
