PS3 BBC iPlayer Gets A Revamp

BBC iPlayer on PS3 is to get a make over and will move from using the creaky PS3 web browser to a standalone app.

The new app has been built from scratch with new features including viewer recommendations and a “vastly improved” search function.

As well as a new app, more shows from the BBC archive will be added to the service and programs will be available for longer than seven days.

Rather oddly the BBC do not seem to mention the best feature of the upgrade,  look closely at the screenshot below and you will see the PS3 is getting BBC HD.

  1. I read about this in the Metro, but it was going on about accessing iPlayer directly from your television, and making it sound like iPlayer wasn’t available on PS3 until now.

    Anyway, I’ll be trying this out tonight.

  3. My god, the very day I buy a freeview HD box for HD content from the BBC …. @%*!

      • It hasn’t arrived yet :| ordered from play this morning, for £60 a HD freeview recorder…. if 40d and itv player announce improvements its defo going back though!

  4. I use my internet TV for iplayer but will switch to the PS3 now it’s going to be in HD.

  5. Brilliant news considering my Sky sub finishes at the end of the month. I’ll still be able to watch Doctor Who in HD : )

  6. Hmm. Just watched the start of Top Gear in HD and it looked like the image was too big for the screen. The HD logo was half cut off in the top corner and it definitely wasn’t an HD picture. Anyone else had this?

    • Mine is also cut off but it’s in hd

    • Tried watching David Attenborough’s Madagascar documentary on the HD channel. Definitely not in HD.

  7. Liking it a lot. Just need them to fill it full of DRM and get a download service.

  8. i have just turned on ps3 to see the new bbci player and when i click on the icon its still the webpage interface ..no download of app. what the hells going on here i have turned off and on ps3 several time still the same.guess no hd for me then

    • It took a couple of attempts to get it to download for me, checked the system update and tried the ITV player before it came up with the option to download.
