Official PS Vita OS Shots Surface

Want to see eleven fancy new screenshots from PS Vita’s operating system, from Gamescom?  Course you do, and don’t worry: we got your back.

From left to right, top to bottom, then, we’ve got:

  1. A LiveArea splash screen for Wipeout
  2. The PlayStation Store
  3. Trophy display
  4. Your User ID and profile
  5. Messaging
  6. Near
  7. Another shot of the PlayStation Store
  8. Game invites
  9. A Near pop-up
  10. Party
  11. The splash screen for Uncharted

Yes, they’re colourful, but we can’t help feel that they’re a bit cluttered and noisy, and perhaps too colourful.  Certainly, they’re lacking the sterile beauty of the XMB, and heading more towards the way the 3DS has entirely different layouts for each screen.

We’ll see how this pans out…

  1. bang tidy

    • Agreed, plus I’d die for this device!
I don’t at all believe people wouldn’t want two portable devices on them, if it’s just a mobile phone and this baby! xD

  2. I find the layouts a pretty nice change from the XMB if I’m honest. I don’t particularly like the blandness of the XMB and this is looking very appealing indeed :)

    • I agree, never been a massive fan of the XMB. I personally find certain things a pain to find or use and can confirm that less console literate users (the wife) dont get on with it at all.

Needed to be more colourful and eyecatching, and due to the touchscreen capabilities on the Vita the classic XMB was always going to have been defunct as a method of organization/navigation.

  3. Looking good – and am glad that our PSN Accounts are going to be connected through all PlayStation devices (assumed by looking at the Trophy screen-shots). Hopefully we’ll be able to see who’s playing PS3 or PSVita whether we’re signed in to PSN on either device ourselves.

    • Such a simple thing but so appealing! It would be nice to message people over PSN on the go as well.

      • I agree it’s a nice touch but doesn’t it raise questions over hacks etc.? The reason given for not implementing trophies into the PSP games was that it was a security risk and as it is easy to hack, trophies would become almost pointless.

Maybe Sony have already provided details of how secure the Vita will be and I have just missed it?

  4. They look more like the official playstation website than an Os.

  5. Nice. Really like the PS store layout, looks to really take advantage of the touchscreen.

  6. Ok I am starting to get a bit excited about this after seening those screens. Think I will wait until I got to north America next year before getting one though! :o)

  7. Honestly not saying this to slag the Vita off,(after some of my opinions on the current portable market).

But I’m not keen *ducks* It looks too busy for me, that would look cluttered on a 42″ TV let alone a portable screen.

Also watched a couple of the Gamescom Vids the other night. Dunno maybe I’m missing something, But the games didn’t really look all that. Couldnt really see much of a jump in graphics from say.. GOW on PSP (the new one, can’t remember the name). :)

    Flame on…

    • Unless you’ve played those Vita games in person, you can’t really state a lack of improvement in the graphics department.

An improvement graphics wise to games are, I think what everyone expects – I can’t see Sony releasing a new console with games on par with the previous gen.

    • Watched some of the gamescom vids last night and sort of see what you mean about the graphics, but I watched the vids on a 32″ telly, shrink these down to the PSV screen and theyre going to look pretty amazing compared to the PSP and DS3. Also GOW on PSP pretty much maxed out the PSPs cababilities, what we’re seeing in the vids are launch games, imagine what will be coming after a year or two.

    • I totally agree. That Store interface reminds me of the mess that was the GT5 menu…

I’m also kinda with you on the Vita videos. Nowhere near the “PS3 on a small screen” claims some people are still spouting. It looks pretty good for textures and models but quite bad for polygon count and particles (as is expected, I suppose). And the Resistance demo they did had a horrible framerate but I guess there’s still time to bring that up.

      • Resistance was a joke – they should never have showed that, even behind closed doors.

To be fair, there’s a massive jump from PSP when you see the games in motion first hand, but no – it’s not PS3 quality. Not far off, mind.

        But that UI is disgusting.

      • Have we taken into account that some of those screens will be customisable and that the garish colours might be a preferences option and nothing more? Also, keep in mind that it’s such a hotch-potch of screens that a coherent design is almost impossible and possibly counter-productive.

  8. Looks good to me(anyway you can’t please everyone on the planet) LoL
One thing tho, i hope all these features are ‘READY’ on ‘DAY ONE’ when the PS Vita comes out. If they are going to take ages to add things i see now on it then i will wait & buy it at a later date.

  9. Looks lovely ;)

  10. OMG WOW! *faints*

This is one OS that is sure to put a smile on my face everytime I boot up the console. :D
I laugh at whoever suggests the XMB. The PSP has already seen the XMB days for 6 years now, don’t you think it’s getting a bit old? Also, the Vita is a touch screen console, so big, colourful icons are a fantastic choice. The XMB is made for buttons primarily.
