Between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 there was a two year gap, though it was a bit less in Europe where we did not get PS3s until four months after R:FoM had released. We were not expecting Resistance 3 until sometime next year and now it looks likely to be the end of 2011.
In an interview in this month’s GamesTM magazine, Insomniac Games’ creative director Marcus Smith has revealed that Insomniac were given an extra year to work on the second Resistance sequel. A decision that came from higher up within Sony and Smith describes as “music to our ears”.
We all like having our deadlines extended but it was particularly welcome at Insomniac as the pressure of trying to turn out a AAA title every two years led to them tending to “cram things out the door”. That pressure was taking a toll on the developers too as he continues, “We were really cranking and killing people doing it.”
“Many of us now have children”, Smith says “and the reality of game development is that we need to maintain the quality, so something else had to change. Extending the development cycle was the way to go. It was something we were discussing from the very beginning.”
Shifting to a three-year development cycle on a AAA game series brings Insomniac and Resistance into line with what has become the standard this generation. The increasing amount of work required to get the best out of the current hardware and create the myriad art assets required for an HD game makes shorter development cycles difficult.
Of course, some developers get away with much longer periods between the key titles of a series. Here’s hoping that the extra year of development effort they are getting to spend on Resistance 3 allows them to give it that extra something that many, myself included, feel was missing from Resistance 2.

I’ve never played Resistance games but if I had known it was developed by Insomniac I may have had a go as I am a fan of theirs. I like games which have had a lot of time to be worked on and given 3 years for a 2 year project is always good to get the developers working with less stress. Games that have year on year updates like COD and FIFA just don’t seem like they’re a good investment as year on year they’re just tweaked and polished without there being major changes.
On the bad side though, Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One looks like a poor effort to add another game to the series. Resistance 3 will have to wait till the actual game footage trailers and previews, it could be a film for all I know.

Can hardly wait – though I know it will be worth it :-)

Can’t wait for a Resistance 3! I loved R2 MP, but R1 Mp is more like “40 bullets to head to kill”, i would be grateful if they maked BFBC2 MP like :D

This can only be a good thing for the series. And each year seems to get stronger and stronger for the PS3 with all these triple A exclusives coming our way.
