Warning: sodium chloride alert. It looks like a wily GameStop employee has snapped what appears to be the launch price (and date) of Sony’s NGP (the PSP2).
Promised by Sony to be “affordable,” the pocket-powerhouse is quoted with a price of $299.99 (roughly €219/£186).
As GameStop usually put a default placeholder of $999.99 on any product they don’t currently know the actual price of (you may have seen that story circling the interweb; we didn’t report on it for obvious reasons), this does appear to be at least plausible.
What does smell fishy is the release date, as launching on New Year’s Day 2012 (see image below)Â just doesn’t sound feasible. Not when, you know, a lot of stores are actually shut. Take this for what it is – a rumour.

I hope this is true, not so much the release date but the price. Sony will be onto a winner if they can release it in that price range.
SpikeyMikey23
plus its a Sunday, so I dont believe the release date
Samiro05
Release in November will colide with an awful lot of software releases but it is a winning month for releases I think. However an early 2012 release will be great too but people who don’t know may already have bought the 3DS so sony need to make sure everyone knows what is coming before people buy the 3DS

Even is that’s the basic price (which it would be), it’s a lot better than I thought.
Jaffa-the-Cake
Yes it sounds like a good price but remember that for the 3DS its for sale in the US for $249 but that translates her as about £210-220. So with the NGP at $299.99 expect it to go on sale here for £250 upwards. Which is, in my opinion, too close to the price of a PS3.
cam the man
If it’s no more than £250 Sony will make a killing, much more and it will put a lot of people off.
flatspikes
£186 plus the new VAT is around £220… Perhaps clag an extra 10% on as we are the UK and £239 or £249 seems like a plausible price point. I’m very doubtful it would be higher… Although I feel a bit sick thinking I paid £205 for my PSP Go….

That price range is brilliant, ties in with Sony saying it’s going to be “affordable”. Personally, I think £300 quid will be affordable for the hardware we’re getting.
Symposium Cacophony
Yeah but ifs it too high it will put off casual buyers, I hope it mimmicks the same success of the PSP in Japan. Multiplayer would be sweet!
jonny_bolton
If this holds true I will get this day one.
Person678
Obviously this isn’t taking VAT into account. Very reasonable price considering what a iPod Touch costs these days in comparison.
Aquastyle
Nice, I’d totally buy it for that price, here’s hoping this is true. Whether I get it on release or not will be decided by the launch line-up, Uncharted would be brilliant..
Bilbo_bobbins
That is a good price, plus VAT as Person678 says, means it’s approx £225. Plus all the bits and games you will buy, it will end up as £300. Not bad really if this is true, I will be buying.
dnlgee
Hopefully the new format of flash media Sony will be using will be just as affordable.
cc_star
Will be a tad more than that, because:
Currency conversion + VAT + a bit because things always cost more here.
The PS3 is $299 isn’t it, and our price is £249 – So I’d expect that, just have to see how stripped down the base unit is now & whether there’s storage options although I’ve not seen a flash hdd mentioned anywhere so perhaps it doesn’t have one.
mrfodder
If true, probably €299 and £259.
Ed the Penguin
It’s probably just their ‘Unknown’ release date. The system probably requires a date to fill in so they’ve just put ‘2 years time’ in!

“As GameStop usually put a default placeholder of $999.99 on any product they don’t currently know the actual price of”
I think the emphasis of the article is because Gamnestop havent followed their ‘norm’ then there is/maybe some substance to it.
SpikeyMikey23
Excuse my last comment, I thought your comment referred to the price, not the date, appologies ;)

New years day 2012 is just over 10months away
Ed the Penguin
@cc_star, oops! I’ll fire up the flux capacitor and head back to 2011!

Your maths is brilliant.
Also, just as $999.99 is a place holder price 01/01/12 is a place holder year when its expected sometime in 2012.
So what we’re looking at is a price of $299.99 sometime in 2012
