TSA Talks Resistance 3 With Insomniac Games

Cameron and Jon then started up Resistance 3 to give us a peek at various spots throughout the game. The early parts really do focus on the human element, showing interaction between Capelli and his wife and child. Rather than being a small cog in a much larger machine, everything feels personal and people will even stop and chat with you as you make your way out of the underground living area.

Of course, this is still a Resistance game so it doesn’t take long before the brown stuff hits the fan and the Chimera attack. The first thing I notice is that the blighters have certainly gotten a heck of a lot more agile, leaping fences and shimmying up walls to try and gain a vantage point. The animation on this type of athletics remains very smooth though.

[drop] The environments seem a lot more open than in previous games, meaning you can expect to be attacked from all sides. Cameron mentions that you can stay in one place and try and take the Chimera out, or move around bit by bit to clear areas.

The weapons look as solid as ever, and sound just as devastating. As expected, they have both a primary and secondary function, and each one can be levelled up by reaching the required amount of kills.

Normal Chimera dispatched, the scene then skips ahead and we are introduced to the Long Legs. These are the stuff of nightmares, as they use jetpacks to command the sky. They are extremely quick, and will move the second you get a shot off at them. What’s interesting to note that is during this battle Cameron used every weapon in his arsenal. It’s wasn’t just for showing off either, as the pace of the fight changes so quickly.

For example, there is a small cluster of Long Legs ahead so you use your single shot pistol with the explosive secondary function is try and fry the whole group at once. One disappears into a building so you switch to the Auger and take him down through the wall. You then spot one in the distance and switch to your scoped weapon. You need to be constantly mixing up your tactics.

Cameron then skipped ahead to a scene where a giant machine known as the ‘Terraformer’ is heading towards your town. This showed off one of the new weather effects nicely, and as the machine gets closer the winds get faster and faster until you’re almost in a hurricane. It looks very impressive.

If that wasn’t enough the level ends with a battle against a Brawler. An evolution of the Titan, the Brawler doesn’t rely on guns as it prefers to get up close and beat the life out of you. It’s rather terrifying seeing something the size of a bus moving towards you faster than a normal, smaller Chimera.  If you try and back off it will a) fire incendiary grenades at you, b) throw a car at you or c) rip up chunks of the ground to hurl in your direction.

It’s intense stuff, and I see now why certain levels will have a slower pace to them. Ten hours of what I’ve just witnessed would end up turning you into a nervous wreck.

What we’ve seen of the game so far looks promising, but the next stop is our review.

  1. ahh great interview, and from what you’ve seen it sounds so exciting. I’ve always been impressed by the weaponry and enemies on show in resistance games. Can’t wait for the 9th Sep :D

    • btw the article has no image on the front page ;)

  2. Lovely interview. I always have time to listen to Insomniac.

Shall I fashion a main features graphic for you all? :-P

  3. Ooooh, invited eh? That’s just showing off. The game’s sounding good though, so I’ll let you off for the cockiness ;)

  4. I like what i heard. I may pop into the multiplayer just to see what it is like and if i enjoy it or not. I wonder with the Terraformer battle if you will have to struggle against the winds? e.g. they slowly push you back and make it a bit hard to aim.

  5. Sounds exciting, I might get this eventually.

  6. Sounds good, still a little worried about the brown colour scheme :/

    • don’t worry thats just the opening levels if you look at the trailers we see snow and all sorts

  7. Awesome read. Day one.

  8. At first I got really frustrated with the damage weapons deal with multiplayer because its very easy for somebody else to take your kill and vice versa but once I got used to it I enjoyed it a lot.

  9. Oh man, September is so close!! This is going to be amazing, I simply can’t wait any longer!

  10. Nice interview. I’m a bit on the fence with this game, as I’ve not really felt much like playing shooters for this last few months…
Then again the collectors editions do look rather special!
