So today Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered went on sale as a standalone product, despite Activision once saying it would never happen. At the moment the game by itself costs £34.99 on the PlayStation Store. Those of you who had access to Modern Warfare Remastered after buying the Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition may think that with recent developments you wouldn’t need the disc anymore. You’d be wrong as Activision has clarified that version won’t work without the Infinite Warfare disc.
Hi. The existing Legacy Edition of IW will remain unchanged. You'll need your IW disc to play MWR. ^DL

So if you thought you could trade in your disc of Infinite Warfare but still play Modern Warfare Remastered you’re out of luck. Maybe we’ll see a change down the road.

Unless it’s a different version, there is no reason other then Activison not giving a bleep. If it’s on the disc, that makes sense but if it’s just a digital version that is a large file on the disc thus just downloading it, surely it is possible to eliminate the need for a disk?
Oh and the remaster is being milked harder then a cow. Microtransactions, map packs for a remaster of a decade old game. Just wanted to remind everyone of that.

Probably something to do with the disc’s DRM, the software may refuse to run unless it can read a unique security key from the disc.

A bit unfair for PS4 players where they get a code anyway and it demotes the legacy edition to a standard edition.
Completely understand it with the Xbox version though.
