Something for the Weekend – 11/05/19

I feel like Sony’s State of Play this week whetted our appetite for E3, even though we know it’s going to be a very different event this year as we head toward the end of this generation’s life cycle.

Still, we’ve got plenty to celebrate, especially as we’ve made it through a four day week!

Ade heaped the praise on this week’s top scorer, calling it a “charming retro adventure with pixel perfect platforming… ultimately, The Messenger is one of the best indie games I’ve ever encountered.”

This Week’s Features

Tef kicked things off by chatting with Codemasters‘ Lead Game and Car Handling Designers about F1 2019 and all the improvements it’s set to bring to the series, from Formula Two to broader esports and multiplayer support. Keeping the sporting theme going, he also padded up for a go with Cricket 19 ahead of the game’s release coinciding with the World Cup later this month.

Jason went hands on with Code Vein, with his lasting impression seeming to be that it’s basically Dark Souls for anime fans, and he can’t wait to play more. Meanwhile, Aran took a fresh look at Masquerada: Songs and Shadows, as it’s released on Nintendo Switch.

Finishing off the week, we had What We Played, featuring Destiny 2, Borderlands & Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Checking in with the community, it seems a lot of you are enjoying Days Gone far more than the critics did:

  • Another week, another platinum; this time it’s Mortal Kombat 11 for Crazy_Del, who plans to add Days Gone to that list too.
  • Days Gone is also the one that aerobes platinum’ed earlier this week, who thinks the game is in his Top 10 of all time!
  • TSBonyman is hooked on Dreams and the music editor.
  • MrYd wasn’t impressed with Overcooked, but found more joy in Dragon Quest XI, and Grip.
  • And lastly, JR. reckons Days Gone is his GOTY so far, and is already hoping for a sequel!
