Something for the Weekend – 26/06/21

Mario Golf: Super Rush Switch Header

The weather’s picked up just in time for a weekend, and it’s big weekend for sports fans, with the knockout rounds of Euro 2020 starting today with pretty much the entire world supporting Denmark against Wales. There’s also the Styrian Grand Prix in the Formula 1, and the start of the Tour de France.

Don’t worry if you don’t like sports, though. There’s always video games to keep you occupied!

In the News This Week

As expected, the news was a little slower this week, as we live in the post-E3 glow.

Games in Review

We had a whole host of games in for review this week, include big hitters like Mario Golf: Super Rush and Scarlet Nexus. Which games have come out on top?

Alongside those reviews came a healthy bunch of previews, looking at some more upcoming games. I previewed Lake at the end of the Summer Games Fest demo event, digging its chilled out vibe and picturesque depiction of the small town American postal service.

Meanwhile, Nick dove into the Multiverse of Madness for his preview of The Hand of Merlin, and Reuben enjoyed his time with LOST EPIC, which has just entered Early Access. Last weekend, and just before its release, I previewed Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life, looking at how it has aimed to be more than a cheap tie in to the Pirates of the Caribbean universe.

I also tucked into Metro Exodus on Xbox Series X, comparing it to the original 2019 release on Xbox One X. The full-on ray traced lighting is a great sign of the possibilities for this coming generation.

With Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart’s release a couple weeks behind us, Francis had time to reflect on everything it tried to do. Is it actually a step back for the series?

Finally, What We Played featured Mario Golf: Super Rush, Scarlet Nexus and Mighty Goose

Your Achievements

Here’s what you in our community has been up to this week:

  • gazzagb built himself an almost wholly new PC (everything but the GPU) and has been enjoying the performance boost in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  • MrYd finished off all the races in Dirt 5, and then used elastic bands to get the platinum from the final trophy. He also finished the story in AC Valhalla and Observer, and continued to feed his Slay the Spire addiction.
  • AC Valhalla is still on tactical20‘s playlist, but it’s got some competition with Mario Golf’s arrival.
  • doomsday619 completed Days Gone for the second time (but is still working on the platinum), completed Metro Exodus on PS5, and (presumably) let his sons beat him in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
  • willbuchanan got 100% of the trophies for Borderlands The Pre-Sequel, and is now taking a little break from the series before he tackles Borderlands 3. What will he play next?
  • hornet1990 managed to do something I have never done: how to drift in a racing game. Specifically, in Need for Speed.
  • And Crazy_Del went back to the PS4 and Resident Evil Village on the last generation to breeze through the game and pick up its platinum trophy for a second time. He then played through the enjoyable Moss on PSVR.

That’s it for this week’s gaming round-up. As always, have fun at home, stay safe if and when you’re out, and we’ll see you next week.
